Was once M.P for Aberdeen South (got in on the Scottish Labour wave of 1987) but lost his seat in 1992 (the only Labour M.P to lose his seat to a Tory that year). Back then he was very much on the Hard Left; not so since his return (for Aberdeen Central) in 1997.
