Working on a story link.

USAToday:

Aide: Ohio Rep. Gillmor found dead

WASHINGTON (AP) — Ohio Rep. Paul Gillmor was found dead in his apartment Wednesday, a Republican leadership aide said.
The aide said the body of the 68-year-old Republican was found by staff members who went to his apartment after he failed to show up for work. There was no immediate word on the cause of his death. Gillmor's office did not respond to a reporter's call.

Gillmor, who represented Ohio's 5th District in the Bowling Green area of the state, was first elected to Congress in 1988.

The aide spoke on condition of anonymity pending an official announcement.

Sad to hear. The district seems pretty safe for the GOP, so I don't see this as a potential pickup.

While it is crass to start talking about this so soon, I'd have to disagree.  Granted, he got 57%  in 2006, but he also faced minor opposition.  With an open seat attracting better Democratic candidates and a likely infusion of funds from outside this district, there's a chance that this could be a Democratic pickup.  Not a big chance, but a realistic chance.

Come on. Nobody here knew him or probably had even heard of him (outside of the Ohio posters, perhaps). This is a politics messageboard, after all. Might as well discuss what comes next.

The seat voted over 60% for Bush as well as for DeWine and only barely for Strickland. Ohio has changed, but not that much; the Ohio GOP would have to nominate Joy Padgett or a clone of Jean Schmidt to lose it.

Actually I lived in his district up until a couple of months ago. He had a solid hold on the district, but if I remember correctly the Democratic candidate who has run against him several times inched up in the polls more during every cycle. It's pretty solid Republican.. very rural and with a lot of churchgoing evangelical folks, but anything's possible.

Right, because I don't pretend to be sad over the death some politician I'd never heard of before today, I'm equivalent to a convicted felon. That makes a lot of sense.

Yeah, a Schmidt character should indeed be able to lose this seat. I doubt that that's what'll be happening, though.

I guess no one ever explained to you common decency is not about being sad.

I'm here to talk politics. Decency has nothing to do with it. If anybody on here ever knew the man, I'd be inclined to bite my tongue to spare that person's feelings. Otherwise, persons in the public spotlight, particularly obscure ones, are fair game.

Yeah, they're fair game, but wait 2-3 weeks after they died!  You're like that liberal woman, Desiree Cooper, from the Detroit Free Press who dissed Reagan the day after he died.  I hate her w/ a passion.

Not to come off as a callous ass, but what's the point of the 2-3 week "rule" if no one here actually knew him?

What's wrong with that? If an evil person dies, you shouldn't suddenly act like they weren't evil.
