If you think that's bad, you wouldn't want to see Dublin planning. (Thank you Charlie Haughey and his merry men!)

Oh I have, I have (and there are examples much worse than Telford (which has actually been a success overall; the decision to have a New Town in Telford was a good one, but some of the details...) in the U.K), I just decided to use an example that I know very, very well. That, and the whole palace (which is now part of the Uni of Wolverhampton or something daft) thing.

You were in Dublin, when? And where? For that matter. Just Curious. Smiley

It's ridiculous that the government is strong enough to be able to have positions on 90% of these issues.

Was there for a few hours in 1997 (or was it 1998?).

Oh, that far back. Well then you'll be happy to know that the City is now much bigger and uglier than it was then (seriously I've lived here I live now since I was 2 and I can't remember a time when there wasn't cranes or construction outside my house - of course I live just outside the bastardisation of design that we call the M(otorway)-50, which they finally completed a few years back after being planned out for about 10,000,000,000 years and so many legal cases and of course is now well out of date and resembles a smokers clogged arteries with added Co2 at the best of times.. It's rather depressing really. Sad

Sorry, what we talking about again. Tongue

With only one other exception, you are libertarian on virtually every other listed issue.  Why is this the exception?  You never struck me as a supporter of the Brady Campaign before.  For some reason I always pictured you as a pro-gun, libertarian-leaning Democrat.

I'm ignoring the dichotomy, judge for yourself. Also pretty much all of the below I think are state issues so...

Guns - Very supportive of gun rights.
Gambling - Against, just seems to have caused more problems than it's worth.
Alcohol sales restrictions - If you're an adult you should be able to buy liquor.
Tobacco - People can ruin their health if they want to, just don't make me pay for their stupidity.
Smoking in public - Not in public places.
Tobacco advertising - Don't care if it's to adults.
Strip clubs - Don't want to live near one.
Fashion industry (in relation to eating disorders) - What?
Fashion industry (in relation to "morality") - See above.
Pornography - For allowing as long as no one was actually harmed in the making.
Prostitution - Against because it tends to lead to human trafficking and other nastiness, at least in practice.
Fast food - Needs basic regulations but should be allowed.
Pop sales in high schools - Absolutely not, soda contributes to obesity, weakens bones, etc.
School uniforms - Extremely supportive, helps alleviate gang issues and disruptions.
Marketing to minors - It's unethical and promotes all sorts of dysfunctional behaviors. Now how constitutional is it to regulate it? I'm not sure.
Violence in the media - Protected by free speech.
Sex in the media - See above.
Profanity in the media - See above.
Suburban development - I support new urbanism but this would largely dry up if we just stopped subsidizing it through the tax code, highway system, etc. too.

I guess it is a good idea to be specific rather than using a generic label.

Guns- No restrictions whatsoever, anyone who wants one can get one (unless they are a criminal in jail obviously)

Gambling- No restrictions whatsoever, I never understood why the government feels entitled to ban and regulate this in the first place

Alcohol sales restrictions- No restrictions whatsoever. As long as you can reach the counter, the state has no business telling you you can't purchase alcohol.

Tobacco- No government restrictions whatsoever on tobacco use, or "sin taxes". That said, tobacco subsidies need to be ended now.

Smoking in public- The owner of the property should decide. If it is on state property, its their prerogative to ban public smoking as long as the state continues to exist.

Tobacco advertising- No restrictions. Simple free speech.

Strip clubs- No regulation, but perhaps allow local townspeople to vote directly whether to allow one in their backyard

Fashion industry (in relation to eating disorders)- The fashion industry is terrible and psychologically harmful, but no restrictions.

Fashion industry (in relation to "morality")- The fashion industry is immoral and trashy, but no restrictions.

Pornography- No restrictions. It's parents responsibility to tend to their children if they don't want them watching porn.

Prostitution- No restrictions on prostitution itself, however it should be made sure that they are voluntary prostitutes, not sex slaves forced into the practice.

Fast food- Is crap, but no restrictions. You're not forced to eat it.

Pop sales in high schools- I hate soda pop, especially when it contains HFCS, but no restrictions. Repeal the sugar tariffs and domestic corn subsidies that cause soda makers to use high-fructose corn syrup rather than sugar.

School uniforms- Public schools should be shut down, and private schools have the right to set their own uniform policy.

Marketing to minors- No restrictions. Minors don't have money to buy things anyway, it is the parents who need to take charge.

Violence in the media- No restrictions, free speech.

Sex in the media- No restrictions, free speech.

Profanity in the media- No restrictions, free speech.

Suburban development- Neither subsidize nor inhibit. Neighborhoods should develop organically, not from government programs.

What's that lone A for "eating disorders" supposed to mean? (I didn't really understand what he was asking there with the "fashion industry" questions....)

So you're not a libertarian at all then. Most of this is far more authoritarian than the forum's standard. It causes  major problems when me and some of the guys at work have a Texas Hold Em tournament? Most of the girls who advertise in the classified section of the City Pages and the mostly licensed CMT staff at that "happy ending" massage place near me are victims of human trafficking? My high school was full of gangs and disruptions due to the lack of uniforms? You have an anti-free enterprise NIMBYism in regards to strip clubs, which unlike most businesses people are NIMBY about are not polluting at all?
