1978 Referendum on the use of Nuclear Energy in Austria:



Yes: 49.5%

A nuclear power plant was built in Zwentendorf, Lower Austria, in 1972 because then-Chancellor Bruno Kreisky (SPÖ) was sure that the Austrian voters would overwhelmingly support the use of Nuclear Energy in the referendum.

My parents said they will never forget the expression on his face that day when he saw the above result.

Unsurprisingly the opposition conservatives tried to blame him for the defeated proposal - but it backfired and in the following 1979 federal elections Kreisky scored his best result for the SPÖ ever.

Where does the Communist Party hold seat in Styria?

They got most of their votes from the City of Graz (capital of Styria) and its suburb district (Graz-Umgebung) as well as the upper-styrian steel districts, such as Leoben, Bruck an der Mur, Knittelfeld (lots of unionized workers). There`s also a big university in Leoben, with lots of leftist students ...

Here´s the map of the Communists in the 2005 state elections:



Orange = Communist Party below 5%
Red = Communist Party between 5% and 10%
Brown = Communist Party won more than 10%

They got there highest share in the city of Graz with 14%, the uni-city of Leoben was ranked 5th with 9.7%.

A surprise: In Thal, the city where Arnold Schwarzenegger grew up, the Communists got 9.3% in 2005 and the city was the 9th best town that year for the Communists

The overall result in Schwarzeneggers former hometown was:

So there was a swing of 16% to the Parties of Center-Left in Arnies hometown from 48% in 2000 to 64% in 2005 ...

No, it´s in the state of Upper Austria. The mayor is Gerhard Skiba from the SPÖ.

In the last municipial elections in 2003 the SPÖ got 55,7% of the vote, the ÖVP got 18,3%, the Greens got 14,5% and the FPÖ 11,4%.

In the last Upper Austria state elections, the results in Braunau were as followed: SPÖ 47,1%, ÖVP 30,7%, Greens 11,0%, FPÖ 10,5%, KPÖ 0,7%

In the last Austrian parliamentary elections last October, the city voted for: SPÖ 40,8%, ÖVP 24,1%, FPÖ 15,7%, Greens 10,6%, BZÖ 4,1%, List HP Martin 3,8%, KPÖ 0,9%

In the 2004 Austrian Presidential Election Social Democrat Heinz Fischer got 59,1% of the votes and Conservative Benita Ferrero-Waldner got 40,9%.

In the 2004 EU Parliament Elections the SPÖ got 40,4%, the ÖVP 20,3%, HP Martin 16,0%, the Greens 14,2%, the FPÖ 8,2% and the KPÖ 1,0%.

You can say, that the City of Braunau am Inn has a leftist voting pattern, when compared with Upper Austria or Austria in general.
