Dave, have you made a decision yet?  I am just curious.

Partly Wink. I will not be endorsing any of the Republicans running to be President of the United States. Still leaning towards Hillary Clinton, but concern as regards her unfavorables and how this might have a detrimental impact on Congressional races is holding me back

I'm gonna do things properly. Over the Christmas lull, I will be visting the campaign websites of:

Democrats

Hillary Clinton
Barack Obama
John Edwards
Bill Richardson
Joe Biden
Chris Dodd

Republicans

Rudy Giuliani
Mitt Romney
Mike Huckabee
Fred Thompson
John McCain

Although, Joe Biden and Chris Dodd are longshots, they aren't out of step with the Democratic mainstream, which is why I'll give them a fair go. All others, Democratic or Republican, can forget it

I shall assesss the extent to which I agree with them on the issues giving 'weighted' scores of 3 in respect of economic issues; 2 in respect of national security, defense and foreign policy; and 1 in respect of social issues

Whichever prospective candidate emerges tops Smiley will secure my endorsement and this will be announced before the Iowa caucus

I should point out that it is unlikely, I'll be having another 1972 moment. Democrats are heavily favoured.

Of course, if the eventual nominee is not my favoured candidate. I'll make a final call once it becomes clear who the eventual nominees will be. My great hope is whoever is elected President, Democrat or Republican, will actually be prove to be competent and capable of providing effective leadership of the Free World. W, alas, has been a touch lacking on those scores

BTW, is it 'safe' to view Romney's campaign site given that he changes his position on the issues more often than he changes his socks Tongue

Just remember to endorse people based upon their views/positions, and not because they can or cannot win.

I don't really understand the point of making an endorsement in a race you have no influence over and can't even vote in.  Tongue

No one sits on the fence for nothing...

Because Alcon, I'm an internationalist and, being a staunch Americophile, it matters to me that you guys elect a President who is going to restore American prestige and provide effective global leadership. Given that your President is the leader of the Free World, that surely allows me my say. Take it as a compliment that I actually care Smiley

Don't worry I intend to. I'll back the candidate I agree with most (beyond the fringe, that is)

Goes to bed praying it's not a Republican Grin

Of course Dave, you should endorse whoever you want...but I must say, I think that it was ever true that the American President was the "leader of the free world" (which I doubt...but anyway) it certainly isn't true anymore.

Well, I've reached a decision on my favoured Republican but it's the Democratic field from which I'm having most difficulty, essentially because none of them are really Dave Hawk-style Democrats

Nevertheless, I don't care how long it takes I will be annointing a Democratic candidate before voting begins in the Iowa caucuses

It was an arduous task ploughing through the websites, so I've dumped my planned weighted points system and I'm focusing on what would matter most Smiley if I was an American.

As a Brit, and avowed Americophile, I will stress that it does matter to me immensely who will be the next US President will be and I'm looking, first and foremost, at who I feel can restore American prestige and provide effective global leadership in the challenges that lie ahead

Once the nominations are decided, I'll make a final call on whether to endorse the Democratic, the Republican or a 'mainstream' Independent ticket, should one emerge, but not until.

'Fringies' Roll Eyes, however, can forget it Wink

Thumbs up on Mc Cain - he's my favoured choice (if I want the GOP to do well that is)

As for the Dems, I'm split between Obama and Edwards - i'm eeking more towards Edwards.

I'm beginning to think I've just backed the wrong horse Tongue. Still, I've made my endorsement. I'm sticking with it because for me to switch to Obama, post-Iowa, would make me little more than some opportunistic shyster Sad

I will say, however, that should Barack Obama win the Democratic nomination, he will more than likely secure my endorsement. Perhaps, experience, or lack of it, isn't everything in politics after all Wink

My apologies. It's just that Hillary supporters seem a rather bashful bunch on the Forum and that was before the Iowa caucuses
