Bill Bradley's new book, "The New American Story", is about how the Democratic party lost their spine after the 1980 election. The hostage situation (which was manipulated by Reagan) made 1980 be a terrible year for the Democratic party, with many liberal icons in now "red states" going down, such as Senators Frank Church of Idaho, George McGovern of South Dakota, Birch Bayh of Indiana, and  Mike Gravel of Alaska being defeated.

This is the Bill Bradley I voted for President in 2000, not the Bill Bradley the Arnold loving media whore.

Mike Gravel was a liberal icon? Has he changed that much since his time in the senate? Doesn’t he support the Flat tax nowadays?

Well, he did end the draft. That's pretty endearing to us liberals.

But that's not really a solely leftist thing. One of the most prominent speakers at the hearings on the draft back in the 70's was Milton Friedman, who isn't a figure that is all that endearing to the American left.
