Say, anyone convicted of corporate crimes similar to Enron/WorldCom over $1 million gets life. If you can get 10 years for stealing $2000, stealing 500 times that much should get life. In fact if I supported the death penalty I probably would support for white collar super-criminals of the like, but I don't support the death penalty.

I'd much prefer putting them in the public stocks for 1 hour each day of the rest of the lives. Oh, and to be banned from any management position and forced to pay off the debt.

I'm not a fan of mandatory sentences in general (but the idea of forcing them to pay off the debt is... intriguing).

Ever heard of Hyperbole? It's a fantastic invention. You should use it some time: As you can see here: Wiki: Hyperbole

Though in general I tend to agree with this statement:

I oppose jail sentences for white collar or corporate crimes.

Not entirely sure on what is the best alternative though.

I oppose mandatory sentencing. Juries/judges should decide punishments based on the specific facts of the specific case, not some over-reaching law.

Yes.  If you commit the crime above 5,000 feet or above the 5th floor, you deserve a life sentence.  Scum.

I'm not sure why you're attacking me. I was well-aware that you were making a hyperbolic statement. There's no need to be a smart-ass.

No, of course not. Life sentences should generally be reserved for those who pose a real danger to society. The white collar crimes you describe should involve some jail time as well as some multiple of the money they illegally gained be fined to them.

Thinking of it like that, I would but I really think custodial sentences should be primarily for those who, by their violent actions, pose a grave danger to society

Of course, depending on the wider negative impact on society, those guilty of 'white collar' financial felonies should serve some jail time. I have a grim opinion of tax evasion, since widescale evasion of taxes reduce government revenue; thereby, undermining public services

No mandatory life sentences, but life sentence without parole should be on the table.

I guess massive, non-violent theft is a conservative value. *shrugs*

No, but there needs to be mandatory restitution. Like double what they stole.

No - life's a little harsh - and you're talking to somebody who doesn't normally mind harsh punishments.
