A new Public Policy Polling (D) survey finds Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) leads State Rep. Grier Martin (D), 45% to 30%, and tops UNC basketball coach Dean Smith (D), 41% to 35%, in hypothetical general election match-ups for U.S. Senate.

However, just 45% of North Carolina voters approve of the job Dole is doing in the U.S. Senate.

Correct me if I'm missing something here, but isn't it kind of concerning for Dole to only lead a basketball coach by 6%?

Doesnt this poll also give Martin 47% to Dole's 40% when they give bio info on him?

Apparently you are unfamiliar with North Carolina.  See also:  Indiana, Kentucky.

Dean Smith is a legend in North Carolina. Highly doubtful he'd run, though.

Mike Easley has ruled out a run, I presume?

Dean Smith is pretty much a god in some parts of North Carolina.  If he runs, he could very easily win.

This is, after all, where Richard Petty lost for Secretary of State in an upset.

He said he'll never run for a legislative job ever. (I think he wants to be V.P.)

Bad news for Grier Martin: he's moving backwards.

A July 2007 poll from the same firm had the race at Dole 43%; Martin 37%.

That is, of course, if you lend any credence to a PPP firm poll, which the July 2007 results seem to indicate you really shouldn't.

He needs to be strong-armed into running anyway.

How do you strong-arm someone who has incredibly limited ambition for higher office?

Martin's no ordinary State Rep. He's the scion of a well-connected, wealthy political family. His district is in Wake County, a place that the National Journal posits is now paralleling the leftward movement of Fairfax County. If Martin dedicates some of his personal resources to this race, we could see a sleeper in NC.  The one caveat I place on this race is recent Democratic success in defeating Southern incumbents when the Republican doesn't utter the word Maccaca has been non-existent. This is yet another contest in which the top of the ticket will shape the dynamics of the Senate race.

I don't know. I'm sure Schumer could figure something out though.

C'mon, do you really think Schumer has taken on powers of mythological proportions? There's no way he can convince good ole boy Mike Easley to live North Carolina for a job in D.C.  I've heard that Easley loves NC so much he'd turn down the VP job...just to stay in his home state.

This sounds like the same dance the DSCC had with former OR Gov. John Kitzhaber. They begged him to run in 2002, but he demurred largely because he despises Washington. Most Governors prefer an executive position to being one of 100 showboats casting thousands of inane roll call votes.

im unfamiliar with grier martin.  is that dg martin who ran in the democrat primary in 98 but lost to edwards?  the guy that looks like steve martin?

as for richard petty, i disagree with hardrcafe.  his loss wasnt an upset.  he was an *awful* candidate.  the man can barely string a sentence together.  didnt he also get into some trouble over some comments he made?

You misread me.  Of course he was an awful candidate, but he was treated as a God in North Carolina at least up to that point.

Yeah, Petty was a misogynist politician to the right of Jesse Helms.

I remember that election. It was not an upset.

As an NC State fan, I hope Dean Smith does not run. It would not surprise me if he won against Dole. However, he'd need to be active campaigning, something I'm not sure he would do.

how political is dean smith?

ive always heard he is a....gasp....liberal.

but the only issue ive ever heard him speak out on is his opposition to the death penalty.

the only time i can recall him being active in politics is when he made some commercials for richard vinroot...a republican.

I expect Dole to win comfortably but not overwhelmingly. Probably by about 5-10 points.
