I honestly don't understand the part about how a 14 year old can drink all they want as long as somebody else buys it.  Is it just to ensure some sort of parental consent?

I don't see why we need to lower our standards so much.  I mean, 14-17 is going to get their booze regardless of whether it is legal or not.  Might as well make it a challenge or have we given up on youth to the point where they don't need to work hard for anything?

Okay, I'm intensely against this bill.  While I can see a legit reason to lower the drinking age to 18—something I'm personally opposed to, but not vehemently opposed to—dropping the drinking age to 16 is a recipe for disaster.

I mean, we want to make the day a kid first gets a set of car keys the same day a kid can legally buy alcohol.  I mean, seriously?  That's a good idea?

This will send DUIs through the roof, with drunk-driving-related fatalities right along with it.

From that angle, the driving age should definitely be later than the drinking age.

Shouldn't that be later?  Have the kids be able to drive sober before giving them the access to be able to drive intoxicated?

I just don't see a need for this reform. Alcohol isn't something we should be tossing around freely to the youth, and, while I agreed with lowering the age to 18, below that mark and we're moving into unnecessarily young territory. Mr. Moderate also brings up a good point about DUI.

Unless this bill is amended beyond recognition, I will be voting against it.

No, obviously not. People who're new to alcohol won't behave responsibly, ie refrain from drunk driving. That's a no brainer really.

People who aren't knew to alcohol would think they know the tricks of the trade and will try to get by with drunk driving.

Aye. If this bill ends up passed, which it may, I'd rather it not have absurd punishments attached to it.

Aye, I suppose.

As for the bill, I will support it. I think to avoid the DUI's, the regions should say that drivers lose their liscense if they drink any alcohol before driving for the first few years. That's what they do here.

The problem with that is that most serious accidents are caused by repeat offenders—in many cases, people who have already lost their licence but are still driving.
