So this is how it all goes down: Humphrey wins the West Virginia primary instead of JFK, and so Hubert ends up getting the nomination.  He selects LBJ as his running mate, since he needs a southernor.  Harry Byrd forms a state's rights party, and chooses Strom Thurmond as his running mate.  Nixon still gets the Republican nomination, and still chooses Lodge.  Please include maps.

Humphrey/Johnson: 279
Nixon/Lodge: 189
Byrd/Thurmond: 69

The election goes to the House, controlled by Democrats, who elect Humphrey President.

There is some southern Democrat dissension.  Humphrey and Johnson meet with the southern Democrat caucus.  Johnson has Humphrey's authority to make deals and concessions with the southern Democrats, and master deal maker Johnson puts his considerable talents in this respect to work.  Johnson persuades some of the southern Democrats to come on board and support Humphrey.

Byrd uses his leverage to gain concessions from Humphrey in return for his support and influence with the southern Democrat caucus.

Humphrey/Johnson                238 EV  44% PV
Nixon/Lodge                           238 EV  46% PV
Byrd/Thurmond                         61 EV  10% PV

Despite President Eisenhower's lukewarm support for his Vice President, Richard Nixon easily encounters for the "Happy Warrior" in the 1960 Presidential Election. Maybe it would have been better if Nixon was elected in 1960, but that is a question of What If.
