Well, at least you spelled "research" correct, which certainly makes it a step up from the current Section 2.

I do object so far as that the bill does not clearly state whether this is a one-time investment of $25 million ($50 million in the original bill), or whether this is an increase of $25/50 million per year.

Well it would be based on the provisions set out in the previous bill on which the 'findings' are presumably based. If the bill is to be read independently then the amendment can be reworded.

I motion to strike the entire text of the bill and replace it with

Stem Cell Research Funding Extension Bill

1. The federal government pledges another $25 million towards embryonic stem cell research, effective FY 2008.

Amendment to the "Findings section":
Current text changed to "a." and appended with
b. Adult Stem Cell Research has yielded 72 cures and Embryonic Stem Cell Research has yielded 0 cures.

As the sponsor, this is accepted as friendly (and is a "finding" rather than an "action", so it's a minor detail anyway).

Further, any amendment to increase Embryonic Stem Cell Funding should be deemed frivolous to the current bill being debated. If you want to increase funding, introduce another bill.

Gentlemen, I would like to request that your provide sources for every finding, although that's not stopped anyone in the past for not doing so.

I will not rule that the amendment is frivolous, however if the amendment passes, I may choose to divorce the amendment into a separate bill from the present legislation.

Do we have any indications from someone about how much progress has been made with the initial $50 million in funding? Because that would be somewhat relevant. (Unless we're all just being ideologues here.)

I only recently noticed that this money is $50 million in adult stem cell research to match the $50 million in embryonic stem cell research already approved by a past Senate.

I had misread the text initially, thinking this was just more money for embryonic stem cell research.  Which surprised me a bit, since DWTL was the original sponsor!  (I'm no longer surprised by the bill, FWIW.)

As we don't have any evidence whether our initial investment has provided benefits or not, I will have to abstain on this amendment.

Honestly, if forced to choose between more money to embryonic stem cell research and an "initial investment" into adult stem cells, then I'd rather the money go toward adult cells.

This would not be an initial investment.  Adult stem cells have already been funded, which is why they are always heralded as the be-all and end-all to all of our problems by pro-lifers.

I would just like to say that I fully support more federal funding for both adult stem cell and embryonic stem cell research. That being said I fully support afleitch's current amendment, however I think this bill should be re-written as I find some of the section numbering rather confusing and the overall wording of the two current sections seems a little subpar.

I sincerely hope that the Senate turns this bill down, and instead, considering Senator Ebowed's self-proclaimed enormous wealth, would donate money to adult stem-cell research with their own wallets, rather than forcing others to pay for their charitable donations.
