Santorum eyes gubernatorial bid

Sunday, September 30, 2007

Say it slowly: Gov. Rick Santorum.

Interesting concept, isn't it?

The former Pennsylvania GOP senator, trounced in his re-election bid last year by seldom-seen Democrat Bob Casey Jr., apparently has grown weary of beating the drums about the ongoing terrorist threat as a senior fellow with the Washington-based Ethics and Public Policy Center.

The American Spectator reported last week that Santorum is seriously mulling a run for governor in 2010, when the race will be wide open. Term limits will force current Gov. Ed Rendell from seeking a third term.

Said one unnamed political adviser in The Spectator item: "Rick is a politician. He loves the competition and the process of running. He's getting back in and he's young enough that a gubernatorial run would set him up for greater opportunities politically down the road."

Of course, a Santorum gubernatorial bid is dependent on the Virginia resident being agreeable to actually living in Pennsylvania again. When he was a senator, you may recall, he found that idea abhorrent.

...

Other news:

THE SENATOR AND THE SEX STAR. Sen. Arlen Specter may have turned down a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

But that didn't stop a Specter aide from recently giving a tour of the Capitol to former adult video star Jenna Jameson.

According to The Washington Post, Jameson and her boyfriend, celebrity martial arts fighter Tito Ortiz, were escorted around D.C. by an unnamed Specter assistant. The Post did not reveal why Jameson, an avowed Democrat, got the tour from an underling of a so-called Republican.

But the newspaper dutifully sent a reporter to ask Specter if he planned on meeting with Jameson. A transcript of the conversation:

Specter: "I don't recognize the name. Who? General Jameson?"

Post: "No sir, Jenna. She's, well, she's kind of an actress, in, well, uh, the adult film industry."

Specter: "Do you mean pornos?"

Post: "Yes, senator, that's what we'd call it."

Specter: "I don't think I'm meeting her."

He probably was too busy offering further advice on the Sen. Larry Craig men's room scandal to give Jenna a few minutes.

Good, it'd be so much fun to watch him lose again!

I honestly believe that Santorum could very well have a shot of being elected Governor of PA.

It all depends on who is the Democrat nominee, and how much Santorum can screw the campaign up between now and 2010.

Depends on who the Democrat is. Most resonable candidates (Rooney, Cunningham, Onorato, Wagner) would win, but Santorum could beat a weaker candidate like Hafer.

Probably, but not a sure thing of course.  Santorum, as Jake said, could give the turncoat Hafer a run for her money, if only because no one trusts her partisan leanings.

This makes no sense.  Virginia will have elected a new governor in 2009, not 2010.

The margins Hafer would rack up in suburban Philly against Santorum would leave him unelectable.

I dont think Hafer would do as well in metro philly as her ideology would indicate. Sure she'd win, but the fact she's a turncoat would turn plenty of people off to her.  At the same time, while Santorum wouldn't play well there, he probably would do better (how much is the question) now given the voters got their chance to vent at him.

She wouldn't be able to pull a Casey in the Philly 'burbs and would lose too much ground elsewhere in the state. Not that the scenario is likely at all.

I can't see the dems picking someone who has a history of turncoating either.

How soon before Casey Jr. does the inevitable?

Sprin 2010 obviously. I'd personally love to see a rematch for the Gubernatorial seat.

I by no means am a fan of the man, but I really do believe that he could have a shot in 2010.

He probably wont win, but he'd have a much better shot than he did running for re-election.

Santorum sure is an egomaniac! For someone who claims to represent "family values", he sure doesn't value spending time with his actual family.
