I'm curious about how widespread this practice is; if you don't drive, vote what you would do if you did.

Of course; it's common courtesy.

Yes.  The last time someone did it for me was driving on MN-Hwy 64, which is a very desolate stretch of road snaking up from Motley, MN to a rural intersection just east of Kabekona and west of LaPorte, MN.  Since it's the route of choice for most vacationing in the Bemidji Lakes area, it gets quite busy during the summer.

Most people drive about 70mph despite the 55mph speed limit.  Occasionally there is a cop on the road (very seldomly), and they usually don't pull people over, cuz we're usually in a string of 6 or 7 cars going 15mph over the speed limit.

Anyway, I was driving home from school and it was dusk and there was a car that had passed me about a half mile in front of me, and they must have had a fuzz buster because they started tapping their brakes repeatedly... at first I thought "what the hell?"  then I thought "Oh." and I slowed down, and sure enough, who comes around the corner but the Hubbard County Sheriff... I silently thanked the people in front of me, let the cop drive out of view, and then I sped back up to 70... which is dangerous anyway, considering that I've seen many many deer on this road, and a bear.
