Barack Obama has noticeably stopped wearing one, claiming that he will show his patriotism through his ideas, and also because he believes that the pin has become a substitute for discussing real issues of national security.

The majority of notable politicians have worn a flag lapel pin since September 11th, 2001.

As usual, it's best not to form an opinion on this (or any) issue based on the talking heads at Fox News, who discuss Barack Obama's decision to shun the pin here:

I probably wouldn't wear the U.S. flag. It's too cliched and omnipresent. The flag of Bhutan, however, is really cool:

Certainly not. I have a lapel pin of that photo of Johnny Cash showing the finger; I might wear that regularly.

I don't wear pins, so no, I wouldn't in this case either.

I went to Fox news.com today and couldn't stop laughing at the headlines on their page... I mean, yeah.. American media is obsessed with reactionary sensationalist bullsh**t, but Fox News takes the cake for sure.

That sounds cool!

Of course wearing the american flag is a sign of fascism.

No idea, but I think it's pretty neat and respectful. Back in early times most men and women work cockades during times of war/unrest.

I acctually agree with Obama here.  Patriotism shouldn't be a cliche.

If I were a notable US politician, yes, I probably would.  Why?  Because if I were a notable US politician, I'd probably have already sold so many of my principles to get elected that I might as well go with the flow and do the necessary song and dance.

Hence why I am never going to be a notable politician.

Wow.

Hannity has never been long on intellegence or common sense.  He tries hard to be like Rush, but he falls short in all categories.  Whatever your thoughts on Limbaugh otherwise, one must admit, he's not nuts, or a dumbass, or any of the number of things most political talk-show hosts are.  I haven't listened to him in years, but I was always informed and entertained, at least, regardless of bias.

Wow.

The funny thing is that Hannity has not worn the pin himself for a number of recent appearances on TV.  Click here for pictures.

Revolutionary unrest. 1789, 1848, 1918. That sort of thing. Not comparable to the modern US at all.

Southern women wore them as well but I guess that figures in with your first sentence.

Yeah. To put a negative spin on it, newly invented loyalties need to be more aggressively flouted than old ones.
