I voted 14. In North Dakota it's 14 (actually 14 and 6 months, you can get your learner's permit at 14 and must have it for 6 months to get a license).

Making it 18 or higher is rather ridiculous, especially since many people that age or even younger already have full time jobs and often don't have much of a choice but to drive, then of course the difficulty in getting to school in many areas, school events and the like. At least no state is that ridiculous.

Agreed, but they should be more rigorous than currently.

If you want to up the driving age then you can pay more taxes so we can have more buses to drive people around. If you don't want to pay for it then shut up about the driving age.

The driving age should be 16, but we need to drastically boost public transportation funding regardless.

The idea of a single driving age is sort of stupid. Rural driving is easy; a 12 year old can do it responsibly enough. City driving is hard.

I'd favor rural driving at 12 and city at 18.

Why not 16? Because 16 is a bad time to learn how to drive. A 16 year old has either just finished or is still in a growth spurt, and therefore cannot control muscles as well as someone younger or older.

That is stupid.  You still will have kids driving while they are 16 in the rural.  Plus more accidents happen in the rural, not the city.

...or I can up the driving age and pay less on my insurance now that there are fewer stupid teens on the road that could crash into me.

Yea lets do that because teenagers are so stupid and can't drive. How about we just let the people who want to up the driving age drive the teenagers around so the parents don't have to.

drinking age=16
driving age=18

I guarantee a dramatic drop in drunk driving accidents and we can stop wasting time arresting legal adults for drinking.

Those people would still be new, inexperienced drivers.

Going by the Irish Average I suspect that would be around 35.

But this is not the time for anti-Jack Lynch rant.

So as far as thread goes...

Whatever age (as long as over 12) you can constitently pass a road test. Perhaps someone should be tested once every six months for the first two years. And licenses revoked if anyone is caught speeding\drink driving\etc during this time.

Why 12? If an eleven year old can pass the test, why shouldn't he or she be able to drive?

I wonder how many people here refused to drive in high school (because they weren't 18 yet)

Yes, 16-year-olds would still be doing rural driving in my scenario. There is a big difference between learning a task while in a growth spurt, as opposed to continuing to do a task while in a growth spurt.

Citation on your last sentence?

I was mainly thinking of "required tallness to see properly" issue.

That would be an issue addressed on the test, I would imagine.
