The President having nominated Al to the position of Secretary of External Affairs, this Senate hearing is convened to consider the nomination.

I should note that technically speaking, this should still be opened by the PPT; the new Senate session in which you've sworn in as Vice President doesn't start until the first Friday of November.

Sorry, I don't understand. As the sitting VP (and President of the Senate), I thought I had the right to open this thread (I've opened numerous nomination threads before). The nomination (as I understand it) is to be filled immediately, not when the new session starts.

If I'm mistaken, I will of course apologise, but I really don't see what I've done wrong.

It not being proper to sit in judgement upon myself, I resign as Mideast Regional Senator.

Jas can start hearings if I'm not around, or basically do anything else I can.  That's the way I work it around here, so that we get quick response.

Though I expect this to be, essentially, a cornoation of (former) Senator Widdershins, but I would still like to hear his plans for the office of SoEA prior to the vote, if he would be so kind.

An ethical and responsible foreign policy based around an assumption that Democracy is better than being merely the best government system of a series of poor choices and that rich countries have a moral duty to help (rather than to exploit) poor ones.

Sorry if that's a bit, um, well... you know... but I won't have access to the internet for the rest of the day (I think) and have to be somewhere in about ten minutes. Should be back online tomorrow.

What action do you believe should be taken to address the genocide occurring in Sudan?

Internets back for a few minutes.

Well if Atlasia-timeline be true, then there is no problem of any sort in Sudan.

Ignoring that, um, possibility, I'm not sure there's much we can do... beyond sending aid, giving support to UN&Etc peacekeepers (there would be political problems with sending our own), trying to influence negotiations and so on and so forth. All of which I will do, if confirmed as SOEA. All of which would be more than current policy on the issue.

In other words; much and nothing.

Alright, just a few more questions
1. Do you agree with legislation passed last year describing Turkey's extermination of Armenians in the 1910's as genocide?
2. Did you support the embargo against Cuba that was in place until the passage of the Cuban Relations Act which normalized our relationship with Cuba?

If I may ask the honorable former Senator and next SoEA, what do you plan to do finally make the Dept. active etc. (I understand Ernest had problems in the way to prevent him from delivering, but to me it seems that past SoEA have only held the title not to do much).

Many, many things. The most important of which, at least in terms of visibility, will be commenting on events outside Atlasia in a way that indicates what the direction of Atlasian foreign policy.

I may also kick off some foreign (and defense) policy reviews and the like.

On the whole, yes.

Always thought it was a little counter-productive actually.
