Minimum Wage Revision Bill

1. All minimum wages throughout every federal territory will be increased by $0.50 effective January 2008, and by another $0.25 effective June 2008.
2. The District of Columbia minimum wage will be increased by $0.50 effective January 2008 (or a wage of $7.70).  It shall remain annually indexed to the Consumer Pricing Index.

I would like to ask Sen. Ebowed why he thinks an increase is necessary given that the federal minimum wage is already indexed to inflation.

I have an amendment for this bill that I'll be filing tomorrow.  I want to see the Senate pass a minimum wage law applying to all of Atlasia, so we can challenge the status quo in the Supreme Court and give them something to do.

Because the link often does not adequately reflect the rise in wages.

Just FYI, I scrapped my planned amendment in light of the Public Interest Amendment's introduction.

Yet have things really changed so substantially since the last minimum wage was passed that inflation indexing is insufficient? I think not.

Just a reminder that this bill is still being debated.

I'll motion for cloture, then.

Minimum wages for federal territories (which are as low as $2) have not been raised since the inception of Atlasia.

So then, does that mean the new minimum wage will be $2 plus 75 cents?

Something like that.  Better than nothing.

Assuming their different markets/fragile economies are the reason for the low wages to begin with, I assume a small raise in the minimum wage would, theoretically, catch them up with the Regions & D.C., which have increasingly higher minimum wages.

Or absolutely destroy the local economies of those territories by sending unemployment through the roof.  I don't think you can safely increase the minimum wage anywhere by 25% in one clip and not get some very bad consequences.

It wasn't "ftr"; your vote was essential to passing cloture.

Result on Motion for Cloture
Aye: 7 (Moderate; Ebowed; afleitch; Verily; Sensei; SoS; Earl)
Nay: 1 (Sam)
Abstain [Didn't Vote]: 2 (Brandon; Friz)

With seven in favor and one opposed, the motion for cloture carries. We are now voting on the following legislation:

I'm still not convinced that this increase is a good idea. I'm going to wait a bit on voting for this myself.
