A good question.

Federalist: Dewitt Clinton, I suppose... all of their failed candidates were pretty awful.

Old Republican: I guess the 1796 version of Jefferson, since he's the only one who lost (George Clinton never actually ran for President, did he?)

Whig: Henry Clay, hands down.

New Republican: Probably Wendell Willkie.

Democrat: Adlai Stevenson.

Republican- Bob Dole. He's a great American.
Democrat- Al Gore. He, too, is a great American, just not in Dole's way.

He ran in 1792 and came in third after Washington and Adams.  Under the rules then, Jefferson basically had zero chance since the Virginia electors couldn't vote for both him and Washington, so Clinton was the Republican standard bearer.

Republican: Thomas Dewey
Democrats: Hubert Humphrey

These are two of my favorites as well, Republican Thomas Dewey and Democrat Hubert Humphrey.

Both would have made fine and capable Presidents.
