Family name (paternal grandfather): Gray

Paternal grandmother: Flynn

Maternal grandfather: Main

Maternal grandmother: Bewick (I'm a great-nephew, several times removed, of the wood engraver and ornithologist Thomas Bewick, who, of course, had a swan named after him; while a wren has also took his name)

Well, my family names don't really matter because my mother was adopted.  So, she knows nothing about them other than that they were mostly of Swedish and Norwegian descent with a little German and English.  Her father had sandy blond hair and gray eyes and her mother was blond with green eyes.

So I could be related to someone here and not know it.  In fact, MODU, you could be my uncle.  I expect a sizable check at Christmas time.  Wink

Quite unsurprisingly, I don't think I'm related to anyone here Tongue Although it'd be fairly humorous if I were somehow related to like opebo or jmfcst.

It could be worse; you could be "Jenkins P. Kensingtonworth III, Esq."

As there are less than 100 people with my surname it doesn't appear for 1998. They have a map for 1881 though:

My Taid's family is from North Wales. Shocker isn't it.

Surname: Not telling (the spelling I have is not available, but a variant says that is "Imported: Jewish", according to Al's site)
Dad's Mom: Worthing (highly localized in Rhayader, Llandrindod, Wales; fun fact: 0% of names are more rural, and 7% are more high-status Tongue)
Mom's Dad: Walsh (um, yeah, pretty common Irish name Wink)
Mom's Mom: Hall (Rather inconspicuous)

While we're on the subject of surnames, this be fun: http://www.nationaltrustnames.org.uk/Surnames.aspx

It's a new version of something I linked to ages ago.

Well, according to the site, this is the distribution for my surname in GB in 1998.

It confirms that it's a surname of Irish origin. Most likely to be found in GB in Dumfries, but unsurprisingly much more common in Northern Ireland than anywhere else in the UK (or indeed Ireland).

My mother's maiden name though is identified as of English origin (though for historical reasons, most Irish people would consider it fairly synonymous with Irish nationalism).

Seems to be most heavily concentrated in the English southwest. Apparently only 3% of people have a more high-status name (though goodness knows how yo define that). It also seems to be much more common in New Zealand and Australia than around these parts.

Should I be scared that the example surname that they used in the instruction section is mine? Tongue

Surname: L'Hermine
Mother: Malo
Father's Mother: Beaudoir
Mother's mother: Leveillee

French Canadian, eh?  Can you indroduce me to some hot French Canadian girls?  I have this wierd thing for la femme Quebecois.

And yes, I know, my French sucks... in fact, I don't really know any French, so tha tis probably the best attempt I have ever made to putting together a multiword French statement.  I learned lots of French statements when I was in France, but I never acctually tried to put one of my own together before.

P.S.  That "eh" wasn't intentional, oddly enough.

Allegedly, distantly related to Errol. Dad's brother swore he looked like Errol Flynn. Of course, nobody else noticed Tongue

I don't believe it. My great-grandfather was Irish born and know of no eminent Australian-born biologist, Errol's father, Theodore, being related to him. It was Jack Gray just being a bloody vain bugger

Apparently most MacLarens come from the highlands of Scotland.  This scares me.  It's beautiful country.. but I don't like the idea of having a long lost cousin sitting in a stone shack on top of a Scottish Mountain with only a sheep for companionship.
