It would amazing if all three House seats in New Mexico opened up in a single year.

Wouldn't it be interesting if two Udall's entered the senate at the same time?

And why not Smiley. Of course, Richardson would be my first preference to seek the Senate seat but he's aiming for greater things

We definitely need more dynasties in D.C.

Well without a royal family who else can we revere for no reason?

Anyways, I think Udall's biggest deterrent was being upstaged by a late entry from Richardson.  However, I'm beginning to buy more and more into the theory that Richardson really is running for a spot in Hillary's White House.  I'm not sure it is the VP slot though.  I think he wants to be Clinton's Secretary of State.  Anyways, the point is that Richardson's assurances that he won't run for Senate are probably the biggest factor for Udall right now in reconsidering.

That would be great if Tom Udall decides to run for the New Mexico Senate seat. I take it's the one being vacated by Domenci, right? I've probably spelt his last name wrong too. Oh well. It would be great if both the Udall's are elected to the Senate, maybe one day the Democrats would nominate Udall/Udall.

Awesome!

It would amazing if all three House seats in New Mexico opened up in a single year.
Not to mention this Senate seat.

Wouldn't it be interesting if two Udall's entered the senate at the same time?
And even better, if their cousin Smith exited the Senate at the same time?

Udall wouldn't be a bad candidate, far from it, but he wouldn't be as good a one as seems to be commonly assumed.

He is better, from an electability standpoint, than the current crop of Democratic candidates (Chavez and the like), right?

I have a soft spot for the Udall family...so I'm going to be a bit conflicted about this race should Udall run & get the Democratic nod.

Udall is sending out floaters because Lt. Gov. Diane Denish said no to a Senate run yesterday, Chuck Schumer is pushing him really hard and Bill Richardson apparently is not interested in any Senate run at all and has let Udall know it (as this article points out).

I give the shot of him entering the race at about 50-50 now, based on what I've been reading.  The decision will probably come in the next week or two - I simply don't think he can wait much longer.

However, a primary win for Udall is anything but certain.  Although I suspect he would start off with a lead against Chavez (probably a tad smaller than the 50-31 lead Denish had against Chavez in polling for the 2010 Dem Gov primary conducted a few months ago), and Udall would probably be the early favorite, a win by Udall in the primary is anything but assured.  The primary would be very bloody, probably just as bloody as the Wilson-Pearce contest, and Chavez has a number of angles of attack against Udall that would work pretty well outside Northern New Mexico.  Chavez has publicly stated that regardless whether Udall enters or not, just FYI.  I do think that Viviott would exit the race, simply to run for the open NM-03 seat.

I agree with Al about Udall as a candidate.  I think he would be a slight favorite against Pearce or Wilson (probably moreso against Pearce than Wilson) in a Senate run, but once again a lot of this depends on just how bloodied these candidates get in the primaries.  Should be fun.

If Udall doesn't get in, I don't really see another candidate who can come in and beat Chavez, though I expect the progressives to rally behind Viviott (he can self-fund to a certain extent).

He was up by like 20 points in the last poll.

Who is the overall frontrunner in this race right now?  That is, if you had to pick who you think is most likely to be elected the next Senator from NM next November, who would you pick?

Report: Tom Udall Putting Together Campaign For Senate

The news yesterday, that Congressman Tom Udall (D-NM) is reconsidering his previous decision not to run for Senate, now appears to be getting even more serious.

New Mexico political columnist Heath Haussamen reports that multiple sources have confirmed that Udall is now actively putting together a campaign structure for a potential Senate run.

If he runs, Udall would be considered the favorite for the seat of retiring GOP Senator Pete Domenici.

If Romney wins the GOP nomination, and both Udalls end up running for Senate, then we're going to be swamped by a million "Mormons and politics" media stories throughout 2008.

If you listen to NPR, you've probably already heard a million "Mormons and politics" stories.

Hopefully, with Richardson not interested, it will be Udall vs Pearce. BTW, how does someone as economically psycho as Pearce represent NM-02 in the first place? Hispanics aren't their own throat-cutters, surely, or is NM-02 not very Hispanic?
