Your longstanding commitment to the prevention of the spread of democracy and good community relations on the Indian subcontinent? That, after all, is what Pakistan owes its very existence to.

because he is a good, pro-western, secular dictator.

and he isnt morally opposed to hooking up the jumper cables to the genitals of any islamist that gets a little unruly.

The usual condemnations are coming in; I note that the Foreign Office has expressed it's "grave concern" and that the State Department is "deeply disturbed". Strong words for diplomats.

I wouldn't say pro-Western, more just he made a decision for self-preservation six years ago toward supporting the Americans' efforts in Afghanistan.

Musharref, Bhutto, and the Taliban. The army, the democrats, and the theocrats. One of these three are going to win. And by win, I don't mean necessarily an election. Who's everyone got?

I wouldn't *identify* the Islamist Parties with the Taliban... and I certainly wouldn't call Bhutto a Democrat. Even though she's the best of that bunch.

I can't say I'm surprised Musharref did this. As I saw on the news this morning, Musharref did this not because of on going violence in Pakistan, but because of the legality of his candidacy in the Pakistani Presidential Election. And what was Musharref's first act when he declared Martial Law, he sacked the Chief Justice of the Pakistani Supreme Court.

It's to negate the possible constitutional issues that could arise from the court overturning the election results.

If the constitution has been suspended... whoops!

Not ideal, far from it, BUT I'm not oblivious to the bigger picture. Pakistan can not and must not fall into the hands of radical Islamists, who if in control of Pakistan would either engage in terrorism or, at the very least, sponsor it

The West needs Musharaf firmly in control of Pakistan and our security trumps all else

OK - I'm kinda out of the news loop on this one - here's my understanding of the situation - please correct me if I'm wrong:

Musharraf declared emergency rule and suspended the constitution - eliminating power of the Supreme Court to keep the election results from being overturned.

Why would they be overturned?

Some constitutional issue I can't remember, like not technically allowed to stand again I think.

Going completely off topic with the Emergency Rule in Pakistan

I read a really interesting article in a local metropolitan newspaper about Musharref. Musharref stated that Richard Mihous Nixon and Napoleon Bonaparte were his two favourite political leaders. What a deadly combination, that explains things....
