Identical? No.

But they are different sides of the same coin.

Out of curiosity, is it actually fun for you two to engage in pointless debates over meaningless things?

Fun? Absolutely. That plus Boredom and helping boost my post count.

I've been on here alot recently too, due to 'events'. Though I'm hoping to cut down in the future. Plus BRTD has a thing for taking quotes out of context. Would make a good political marketeer then I suppose.

So then why do you keep crucifying the Democrats? Who by the way as flawed as there are way better than any of the WORTHLESS parties in your country (seriously, as far as countries with awful parties go, that's near the top)

This is an American forum; plus if I want to discuss Ireland stuff I can do so with Jas, and often do. Plus I dislike the parties of my own country quite alot and have said so many times before. But then again, what do you know about Ireland given that seem to think it's some sort of Catholic Theocracy?

Clearly you haven't been reading Gully's comments on the Irish politics in the Ireland General Discussion thread. But even if he did think that Irish parties were astoundingly fantastic, how is your damning them at all relevant to this discussion? Even if they are worthless, this has no effect one way or the other on the greatness or uselessness of the Democratic party.

And thus meeting exactly one's expectations of a BRTD 'counter-argument'

No, but they both raise hundreds of millions of dollars in campaign funds from many of the same people.  In terms of corruption they are nearly the same.  Both only care about having power.  The people who lead the parties are nothing but rotten, corporate sellouts.

I want a different coin.

BRTD has this thing where he will pick something bad, compare it to something worse, and then claim that the first thing is good because it's better than the second.  Check his posts, he does it a lot.

Has anybody else noticed the following process among BRTD's threads?:

    1. Quote taken out of context.
    2. New poll asking people if they agree with the quote.
    3. Intelligent responses met with appalling lack of logic and knowledge.
    4. Pwnage

Just when I think our ever-so-predictable BRTD couldn't be any more of a Palooka or Ferrous Cranus, he outdoes himself again and again.

Pretty much spot on.

Oh and I would agree with this comment:

No, but they are similar in enough respects that I disdain both of them.

I agree.  In the first place it is exaggerating the differences between the Democrats and the Republicans to say they are different sides of the same coin.  They are definitely both on the same side of the same coin (how could it be otherwise, give who owns the coin?), but there are of course a few minor differences.

Lastly, to say communists and fascists are 'two sides of the same coin' is to greatly understate their differences.

Removing BRTD's obvious sarcasm and bias from the question, I'd say that the Republican and Democratic parties are quite different... it is the issues that are all the same that makes the parties seem very similar.

The big issues right now are the war on "Terror", health care, and increasingly, infrastructure.  The Republicans and Democrats hardly agree on any of these issues... with both parties absent mindedly deciding to press hard on their principles at the wrong time:  For example, the Democrats passing non-binding measures about Iraq and the President deciding to "rein in government spending" by vetoing important water works legislation that would prevent another Katrina debacle.  (Though the massive failure of the levies is nothing in comparison to the massive failure of our federal government to respond).

Nothing will get done in the next year, and the Republicans will use that as fuel to claim that "well, we suck... but at least we got something done, even if that sucked even more" and the Democrats will probably bend over in the corner and spread hteir butt cheeks wide while screaming "but it's all their fault!!!"

At the local level, in my area, anyway, the Republicans have been reduced to a swear word and the Democrats have pretty much total control.. so they get blamed for everything good and bad.  The Republicans have been reduced to letters to the editor that no one reads, because the only Republicans writing are ones that lost their election last fall and then got offered a cushy job at the MN Taxpayer's League.
