So this place sounds like your average land of suburban sprawl. What's making you obsessed with it? A strip club ban? Blue laws? An ordinance that says lawns must be sufficiently green?

Take a look at the vote totals since 1992.

Are there any other counties in the country in which Bush in 2004 got more than 32 times as many votes as Ford in 1976?

Or for that matter, more than 5 times as many votes as his father in 1992.

Yeah, the combination of its growth plus its rightward swing is pretty horrid.

This is why I hate political parties.

OMG!  (Random location) is an awful horrible place because it voted for the (X) Party instead of the (Y) Party.  These people must be the stupidest Americans alive.  I think I'll complain about them and hate them just because they vote (X).  Why can't these people just get it through their thick skulls that (X) Party is (fascist, communist, socialist, authoritarian, racist, sexist, weak, totalitarian, evil, corrupt) and (Y) Party is (Godly, righteous, good, just, fair, democratic, freedom-loving, strong, patriotic, compassionate).  Maybe if I degrade the place they live and continue to call them horrible and stupid they'll realize me and my party are better than them and they will capitulate and convert to my way of thinking.  The sooner they realize this the better the country will be under the never-ending rule of my party.

Forsyth County was one of the 5 fastest growing counties in the USA between 1990 and 2000. Its population rose from 44,000 to 98,000 in 10 years. This explains the numerical side of its awful vote totals, but not its hyper-partisan nature. The most Republican county in Georgia? I'm sure its great to live there, but that distinction alone makes it a hella bad place.

What is it about brand new suburban developments that make them so extremely Republican? 97 of the 100 Fastest growing counties in 2004 voted for Bush. Part of this is explained by the Democratic vote being heavily concentrated in large counties, while the GOP vote is spread out over smaller ones, but thats a still a stunning statistic.

Gwinnett County, on the other hand, is way cooler.

I once had a friend who told me she tried cocaine in an apartment in Cumming. Aside from that (and the mildly entertaining name of the county seat), Forsyth County possesses no relevence or distinguishing characteristics in my mind. I voted neutral.

We should be impressed with Forsyth County, Georgia like a doctor is impressed when he finds a record sized tumor in a child's brain.

When looked at on its own, it's impressive... a work of art.  Unfortunately, it's just a perfect example of the cancerous, unsustainable growth that this country has adopted.. and it will be the first to suffer when the natural "chemo therapy" of sky rocketing oil prices and a faltering economy take hold.

I don't know if anyone else here remembers this or not, but in the late '80s, Forsyth County made national news because of its racism. Racist groups started whole big confrontations trying to uphold the county's racist leanings.

Brand new suburban developments are populated by people fleeing the inner suburbs to get away from minorities who make money and thus can move into suburbia.

Very negative, though it does seem that the outer suburbs of most Southern cities are not dramatically different from Forsyth.

As an aside, another awful suburban Atlanta county is Cobb. It has been in the news for its racism and homophobia. It's not nearly as hyper-Republican as Forsyth, though its black population is higher, so probably the white population is just as partisan.

Only Republicans want to live there. Because it's so new, nearly everybody there has chosen to live there. Apparently, the area doesn't appeal to Democrats.

That shouldn't be surprising considering the areas Democrats like to live in (which of course are WAY more fun than those dullsvilles)

That is a coded racist statement. DeKalb now has a large Black Majority population, but used to be suburban and Republican like Cobb and Gwinnett. It was one of at least 2 counties nationwide where Bush in 2000 got fewer votes than Dole in '96 (the other being Prince Georges, MD, which also has a large suburban black population).

Gwinnett County, on the other hand, is way cooler.

No, Gwinnett is pretty bad too.

Yes, its probably the same (They named the highway going through there the "Ronald Reagan Freedom Parkway" or something like that) But a county with 750,000 people will trend Democrat eventually. There was a proposal a few years ago to incorporate the entire county as an independent city (its certainly big enough, and if a podunk village like Jacksonville, FL can, why not Gwinnett?) It seems the proposal was shot down.

I don't know why I like Gwinnett. I agree with nclib that Cobb is awful. Thats the place where they put Creationist stickers in all the school's science textbooks.

I learned that already. Seems like that _Charles_ punk who posted crap about Asian Americans isn't the only idiot xenophobe there.

Someone should tell the KKK about city-data. They would have a really easy time recruiting there.
