The three coastal counties all seem to have gone over 70% for Barbour.

Black turnout seems to have been dire.

Unsurprisingly, my family's home county in MS [Clay] voted for Eaves, it seems.

It's majority black. Black people would vote for a jar of mayonnaise if it were the Democratic candidate.

Hence the 'unsurprisingly.'

Black turnout seems to have been dire.

Which is kinda what I predicted when saying the results here would pretty closely mirror Bush/Kerry.

I should've used my Kentucky prediction of 58-42 here.

I should have stayed with my 58-42 prediction here.  Sad

Black turnout seems to have been dire.

But Eaves did beat Kerry in several counties, meaning he did win over some conservative whites with his Jesus campaign.

He beat John Kerry by two percent. I'm so impressed Roll Eyes

Well it is fairly impressive considering black turnout must've been far lower.

1-Because Al said it, and I'll always believe him on this sort of thing.
2-Barbour ran ahead of Bush in some heavily black counties. Either he won over some blacks, or they didn't vote. I'm more likely to believe the latter.

Check out Claiborne County:

Kerry - 81.46%
Eaves - 75.85%

However, look at majority white Winston County:

Kerry - 42.25%
Eaves - 50.60%

Well, Harry said that he saw some blacks with Barbour signs. In any case, Eaves did only hair better among whites than Kerry did. In both elections, the Republican received the white vote nearly unanimously. I'd say Eaves's Jesus strategy was clearly unsuccessful, though I don't know how he could have beaten Barbour.

One of the noticeable things in the electoral map is that the heavily black counties in mid-western Mississippi which are always heavily Democratic in a Presidential election were still Democrat but by smaller margins.  I imagine African-American turnout must have been much lower than in either 2006 or 2008 in Mississippi as it was an off-year election.  Do we know whether Eaves won the young vote as Kerry did in 2004 yet?

Well, Harry said that he saw some blacks with Barbour signs.

Wow! A few blacks with Barbour signs? That's real evidence Barbour massively improved among blacks. Roll Eyes

I'd like to see some exit poll, but I'd bet now Eaves got more than 20% of the white vote, possibly close to 25%.

Wow, 20% of the white vote. I'm so impressed. John Kerry got 14%. Huge improvement.
