No, Pitt would be his safety.

I read it as Princeton being in the group "my reach" and the rest in the group "safety".

My top choice was the University of Minnesota, but didn't get in. This was a backup.

Other backups:

St. Cloud State University
Minnesota State University-Moorhead
North Dakota State University (WAAAAAY BACKUP. I even said that if I ended up there I'd transfer out as soon as possible just because I didn't want to spend another day in ND. Plus Moorhead is basically in the exact same location.)

Actually I didn't even apply to NDSU because I got accepted to here and the other two Minnesota ones before I bothered to apply there.

I think it was just in descending order of desire, with the top being his reach and the bottom being his safety.

Anyone applying to any private college must have uber-rich parents.

Or have gotten significant financial aid.

My scholarships paid for around $23,000 of my projected tuition/room-board, leaving the remainder as a few hundred more than a local state school would've been. A less wealthy kid with my grades and resume could've gotten more financial aid as well, especially if they had been eligible for state aid that I wasn't (as my school was outside PA).

Jake is correct.

Private Universities and Colleges tend to have quite a bit of grant/loan/aid money to throw around.  Certainly made my undergrad do-able.

But, of course, you must also realize that there is no way in hell that a private university is going to give money to someone like BRTD, so really the example is inapplicable in that situation.

I went to the same university as the poster in reply #10 and graduated five years before him.  The advantage at that university at that time was that tuition was about 1/2 your average private university in the NE, etc.  Now, it's only about 2/3rds your average private university in the NE.

Princeton and Georgetown are amazing.  The entire area of Georgetown is great and the school is also very impressive.  Same can be said of Princeton of course, but I'm kind of biased. Smiley

Georgetown also forces you to take two philosophy and two theology classes.  kthxbye.

I think that's actually a good idea.  It fosters critical thinking in students that may not be there for students just going for the name.  My college requires a lot of things like that.

Hint about my leanings:

I'm in the FSU Honors Program, and I like it pretty well. I advise any high school students who like to work to get into honors programs.

Check out Thammasat University in Bangkok.  It is, on balance, a freedom fighting institution, which is amazing.  Its founder, Pridi, is one of the few freedom figthers in Thai history.  Of course he was hounded out of the country by US-supported right wing thugs.  But they could never quite get rid of Thammasat.  Anyone know about the 1976 massacres there?
