Wow what a faux paux on my part.  Pulp Fiction is quite excellent.  The Departed is really good.

Ten year olds have no business watching these, in 3 or 4 years, I could show most but not all of them, and if I were a parent I don't think I'd actually sit the kid down and show any of these.

Basically any of them although I would encourage him not to watch some of them because of their suck factor being too high.

Even I would have to take Salo or the 120 Days of Sodom off the table though. Has anyone here actually seen that?

Now the question is would anyone let their kid watch Salo or the 120 Days of Sodom?

Straha apparentely.

I'd also say that anyone willing to let their kid watch Irréversible better be prepared to shell big bucks for a child therapist.

As for anyone having actually seen it, I've seen parts but have not gathered the courage to watch the whole thing. Rob has seen the whole thing though.

I have seen clips also and I would watch the whole thing if I had it or could find it. I haven't seen Irreversible so I can't speak to that.

"Officially" speaking, my daughter won't be allowed to watch very many of these. I won't make an exhaustive list because I've only heard of 50% of them.

Off the record, she can sneak whatever she wants. I really don't mind too much about that. I just don't want to be endorsing bad behavior by sitting her down to watch a movie that glorifies said behavior (such as American Pie).

I would agree with Yak. A 10-year old should probably not watch many of these. Titanic wouldn't be very harmful though. But most of the others are too violent or sex-obsessed for someone that age.

I'd only let my kids watch these few:
The Matrix
Jackass: The Movie
Jackass: Number Two
Titanic and Donnie Darko-I think they would be bored by both though

Maybe, depending on the kid:
Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
Kill Bill

I think The Matrix and Kill Bill suck so I wouldn't encourage either of those, but I'd let them watch them if they wanted to.

I wouldn't let my kid watch Titanic not because of any of the content, but because it's a horrible horrible movie. That's the reason I wouldn't let them watch Hostel either, not the violence. And if my kid was a girl and wanted to see The Notebook (since obviously no male would want to see that movie), I'd force her to watch Alpha Dog instead and say "see, it's the same director, so it's basically the same thing."

BTW, can anyone explain what is innapropiate about Superbad?

Other than the incredibly lame cop characters taking up so much screen time, nothing really.

Very few of them *Officially*.

But if a 10 year old wanted to watch, say, Salo then I would be more intrigued than worried.

I don't have a ten-year-old, but I have a three-year-old.  I look into my DVD collection and see Requiem for a Dream, Reservoir Dogs, Reflections of Evil, and Truth or Consequences.  I consider them all to be good movies, but obviously they were all bought by me some years ago.  I never realized how violent my tastes were in movies till he was born.  Nowadays, we buy Dora and Diego and animated Dinosaurs.  My wife won't even let me watch Family Guy in front of my son.  In all honesty, it's a good call.  Glad she's around.  I haven't seen many of the movies you have mentioned, but here are those that I have seen:

The Matrix
Alpha Dog
American Pie
Caligula
Sin City
Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
Titanic

Of those, I think only American Pie and Titanic are appropriate for my son to watch, although I have no doubt he'd be bored to tears within the first three minutes and want to watch something else.  In fact, I cannot imagine any ten-year-old wanting to sit through Titanic.  I was 29 when I watched it and could barely contain my boredom even at that age.  American Pie, on the other hand, was hilarious for me (who can't help but remember the many uses for tube socks?), but I'm not sure a ten-year-old would really appreciate the humor.  The others are too violent, imho, or have scenes that I just don't care to explain.
