Police Reward Good Drivers With Coffee

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. (AP) — Happy holidays. Now pull over to the side of the road.

Motorists may be in for a surprise if they spot flashing red lights in their rearview mirrors in this Sacramento suburb during the holiday season.

Police are stopping law-abiding motorists and rewarding their good driving with $5 Starbucks gift cards.

A traffic officer came up with the idea to "promote the holiday spirit and enhance goodwill between the traffic unit and the motoring public," police Sgt. Tim Curran said.

Local businesses donated money to buy the gift cards.

"They raised a substantial amount of money," Curran said. "They'll be pulling over a lot of people."

Or, in other words: taxpayer money is being spent to pull over drivers so that they be advertised to.

Bulls--t idea. I vaguely recall they did this once in Alberta or someplace, only with a free steak dinner.

I don't really see a problem with it. It's a nice holiday gesture.

I wonder if a $5 Starbucks card is worth the half-hour off your life from stress and embarrassment, especially if you don't like coffee?

Law enforcement should attempt to not be pricks throughout the year, not just Christmas.

Either way, the fact that it's a gift voucher for Starbucks is the most objectionable thing.  Why not just give them five bucks?  Much less corporatist.

Yes, let's just hand cold hard cash out to people. That's a great plan.

Ideally they'd give them a giftcard to a local coffee shop, not some horrible corporation like Starbucks, but whatever.

I find it a better plan than giving people something unsolicited that that person might find totally worthless.

Did y'all not even read the top of the article?  It says local businesses donated the money for the cards.  This seems like a kind gesture to me.

I would like it more if it wasn't promoting the unhealthy habit of drinking coffee.

Mild dosages of caffeine are relatively harmless.  I find a good cup of coffee or cappucino (sp?) very energizing some days.

Caffeine, like most drugs, is a wonderful thing if used in moderation.

This is a stupid idea.  Don't cops have better things to be doing than pulling people over for driving the way they are supposed to.  This is as stupid as "participation trophies".  You shouldn't be rewarded for doing what you're supposed to do.

Which reminds me of Chris Rock's bit on that.

Uhh...Law Enforcement executing something that looks like a traffic stop (with all the potential issues related to that)...how soon before they pull over someone with the intent of giving them a starbucks card before someone either (1) flees or (2) the starbucks stop leads to some sort of arrest because the officer then noticed something illegal.

Yuletide fun I say

Not harmful, yes... but I wouldn't go so far as to say "wonderful".  Far too many people see it as an alternative to getting enough sleep each night.

Occasionally people need to be awake when they would normally be sleeping, caffeine is a wonderful thing to those people.

I don't actually have a problem with caffeine consumption, although it doesn't do much for me.  The title was sort of an attention grabber/joke.

Yes, giving out cash to drivers is a stupid idea.  The point is that so is giving them Starbucks gift certificates.

I'd use the card to buy one of those giant muffins, not coffee.

It's a nice gesture, but do they really have to pull people over to do this? I'd be pissed if I got pulled over for a sodding $5 gift card that made me late to work. Although I suppose I could give it to my boss.
