Rape victim gets 200 lashes

15/11/2007 14:08  - (SA)

Riyadh - A court in the ultra-conservative kingdom of Saudi Arabia is punishing a female victim of gang rape with 200 lashes and six months in jail, a newspaper reported on Thursday.

The 19-year-old woman - whose six armed attackers have been sentenced to jail terms - was initially ordered to undergo 90 lashes for "being in the car of an unrelated male at the time of the rape", the Arab News reported.

But in a new verdict issued after Saudi Arabia's Higher Judicial Council ordered a retrial, the court in the eastern town of Al-Qatif more than doubled the number of lashes to 200.

...

Last year, the court sentenced six Saudi men to between one and five years in jail for the rape as well as ordering lashes for the victim, a member of the minority Shi'ite community.

...

In the new verdict issued on Wednesday, the Al-Qatif court also toughened the sentences against the six men to between two and nine years in prison.

The case has angered members of Saudi Arabia's Shi'ite community. The convicted men are Sunni Muslims, the dominant community in the oil-rich Gulf state.

The glories of islamic civilization. Sentencing the VICTIM of the rape to flogging and prison time. Disgusting. Tis a shame Napoleon decided to try conquering Europe as opposed to a new round of crusades in the middle east.

Yes, just like the men who took part in the Crusades were following the will of Jesus.

Both religions are disgusting. The world would be better off without either.

...and we were worried about human rights abuses in Iraq.

There were, relatively speaking virtually no human rights abuses in Iraq compared to those implemented daily in American allies in the region.  Saddam Hussein was clearly a force for improvement in the middle eastern context.. again, it is all relative.  The Baath movement was one of the better influences in the region, but of course it had to be crushed for not cowtowing to the empire.  American involvement has always been to support these right-wing/'religious' extremists, who of course abuse women, minorities, poors, etc., just like their counterparts who rule the US.

I find it particularly amusing that jmfcst criticises theocrats in proxy states while he supports the same sort of rule in the imperial center.

The usual crowd of morons trying to make political capital out of this I see. Not nearly as bad as the actual news item here, but it still leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

The muslims are currently about where Christians were a few hundred years ago, burning people at the stake etc. Maybe one day those countries  will do as the US did and separate church and state.

Well, as we all know, the most important thing in the world is clearly to ensure that no matter what happens, one's political opponents are proven wrong by the occurrence.  Just like when Katrina hit, everyone was falling over themselves to show how it was the other guys' fault.  It's not like there were people who needed help or anything.

Can either of you refute anyhting opebo said or is this just "high and mighty" hour? Anyone who supported the invasion of Iraq based on human rights abuses should certainly have supported a full scale invasion of the Saudi Empire first.

Why would I care about helping people?

One can only assume from their failure to do so that they cannot, Erasurehead.
