Public schools.

Homeschooling should be legal in special circumstances (if the child is a mutant or is being picked on excessively) assuming the parents meet special qualifications.  Though I'd prefer they are educated by a full-time tutor than their own parents.  Of course, I'm aware that not every homeschooler is a crazy fundamentalist, but the question assumes a rather idealistic world where public schools would be relatively consistent in quality from district to district.

None of the above should be legal.

So uh, just abolish schools? While kids would love that, it clearly wouldn't be all that good for society...

Yes and since I still go to a "school", I would certainly love it.

At your age you have to go to college, in which case you don't have to go.

Public schools, but allow home-schooling and private schooling in special circumstances with heavy government oversight.

So? If you're working full time you won't need any money. Plus if that's the only reason you're still in college you're just delaying the inevitable anyway.

How do you know? It depends what you are paid and what the circumstances currently are in your life.

Well, as someone who went to private school up till 7th grade, was then homeschooled for a year, and went to a public high school, I think they all should be legal. I like to think that while the learning style of each was different, they all had their pros and cons, and I’d imagine that each option would work better for a different type of student.

All of them - and why do yall hate private/homeschools?  It gives more money per student to public schools - and if they can pass the same tests - why not.

Public schools receive funds on a per student basis, so no.

All, though some standards should be present for private and home schools.

Those aren't the only people who use private and home schools.

I have serious qualms about home schooling standards and would like the ability to home school to be strictly monitored, essentially having permission given only a situation where there is some clear impediment to the child attending public schools (preventing parents from keeping their children at home to brainwash or because they are overly protective). Private and parochial schools are fine with me as long as the latter get no government funding, and public education is the best thing since sliced bread.

Right - but say there's $100 students and $100 dollars.
Scenario A: School 1 - 45 students/$45 Dollars
School 2 - 55 students/$55 Dollars

Scenario B: Private school: 50 Students ($0)
School 1: 25 Students: $50
School 2: 25 Students: $50

Why allow private, but not homeschooling?

I'm actually quite curious why exactly so many people here think "public schooling is best thing since sliced bread".

Equality of opportunity and the promotion of meritocracy.

Yes that wasn't what BRTD would say. Wink

I do admit though Meritocracy is one of the best things but the school system present (Equality of opportunity though is dubious); even if it isn't the sort of meritocracy I would be in favour of (too much focus on examinations for one thing.)

Ah, a BRTD argument....mmm...probably along the lines of...well I [read: BRTD] went to public school and I'm great therefore public school must be great so everyone should go to public school so they can emulate my greatness. (?) Whereas only rich kids/prudes/the chronically uncool/etc. who I don't like go to private schools, so if you go to private school I wouldn't like you, so private schools should be banned.

(Obviously though his post would have to mention Ralph Nader; opebo; Minnesota; suburbs; blight; and/or alcohol a few times also.)

I do admit though Meritocracy is one of the best things but the school system present (Equality of opportunity though is dubious); even if it isn't the sort of meritocracy I would be in favour of (too much focus on examinations for one thing.)

Yeah there are reasonable points to be made about how public education systems should be run or imporved upon, but the basic underlying reasoning (equality of opportunity and  meritocracy, etc.) is fundamental to my support of public education in principle.
