Who would you have voted for in the 1988 Presidential Election between Vice President Bush and Governor Dukakis?

I'm really not sure who I would have voted for. They were both Bush and Dukakis were weak candidates. And surprisingly, it was a fierce campaign between the two of them, (well Bush was fierce towards Dukakis).

Exit polls show Dukakis carried the prenatal Australian vote 3:2.

Not only that, but I was certain that whoever was elected would be a one term president.  I also thought the same in 2000 for much the same reasons, but obviously 9/11 was not in my political calculus at the time.  No prediction for 2008 (as of yet) whether I think the winner will serve 1 or 2 terms.  Depends on whether the recession waits for 2009 to hit and bad it is, and I'm not going to prognosticate economics this far out.

Dukakis, probably.  don't see any attractive third party options on the ballot in NY.

"probably?"

mike dukakis exemplifies everything great about the democratic party. He's so cool that I've actually made him a primary motif of my college essays

Dukakis, I guess. I'd probably have been a big fan of Bentsen if I were of voting age in 1988, so that would have swayed me.

Dukakis would've made a fine President, and I happily supported him (I did vote for him in our 4th grade class election Smiley).

He made a lousy candidate, though. Too logical and intellectual to connect with the average person.

"Too intellectual" is the same sour grapes used to explain nearly every Democratic Presidential loss since Stevenson, who was not too bright.

The only thing I liked about Mike Dukakis was that he f***ed things up here so bad for Democrats that Bill Weld was able to win and bring along 16 Republican State Senators with him.  (Granted, some of them weren't worth the air they breathed, but I'll still take a two-party state over a one-party state any day of the week.)

I never thought of Dukakis as being an intellectual... maybe in comparison to Bush he was, but not in objective terms.
Do I understand you as saying that Stevenson was "not too bright"? I think you're mistaken there.

Without question the capable and consensus building Bush over the incredibly colorless ultra liberal Dukakis who believed more in granting furloughs to vicious killers than about the rights of victims.

That was my first presidential election.  I voted for Bush.  (And I still think his name and place in history have gotten an unfair bad rap because of his sons behavior.)   He was a decent president.

Wrong Walter - he was a terrible governor.

The Massachusetts Miracle was Ed King's making. Dukakis messed that up. Bill Weld fixed it.

It's funny that Massachusetts was competitive in that election.
