All I'm going to say is that, tomorrow I will be making a speech at my Grandad's funeral. The poor bastard died when his bowel's ruptured on Sunday afternoon. There was nothing they could do. Thankfully, he died in his sleep, which is one of the best way's to go, apart from having a heart attack whilst having sex.

Anywords of advice?

Take a decidedly different approach than you did with this thread.

Very much so.  Don't call him a poor bastard - that won't go over well.

Perhaps tell a story about when he loved and cared for you - a simple story, but a very heartwarming one.

In the true aussie tradition - be respectful, be tactful - but for the love of God make it funny.

That is a painful way to go, at least it was in his sleep.

I echo the other comments in this thread.

Always a good way to go.  Doesn't have to be slap-stick, but a funny story that involves the two of you, or one which everyone probably knows, so they can reflect and feel the humor personally.  Did that earlier this year with my relative that died and we all went back to the old family homestead.  In such a small farming community like that, everyone knew everyone's stories already.

Death sucks, so naturally I'm sorry about the loss.

And good luck, be funny.

Might want to mention that us Yankees are giving thanks today and that you give thanks for having known your granddad.  It'd also be good without mentioning us Yanks.

In the middle of an election campaign, anything even vaguely relating to politics would be rather crass, and 'America' is a political issue here-just as it is worldwide.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss, mate. I hope it was a nice service and he's got a good spot in the ground somewhere-or a nice place to release the ashes if he was cremated.

I made the speech. I believe it went well. My Gran broke down when I made it, poor thing. But she's doing very well in the curcumstance. Nearly everybody came up to me afterwards and said it was good and were proud of me. Surprisingly I didn't breakdown whilst making the speech. But I did about five times during the service.
