Xenephon's starting his own party apparently. Cause he saw how that went so well for Bob Katter...
I think Xenophon's niche won't be gagged by a Clive Palmer type though Tongue

Plus also, he's in the Upper House so the issues that harmed Katter won't really affect him as much.

But the key question is...

Will he be so egotistical to name it after himself?

Yes - it's the "NXT" - Nick Xenophon Team. I was hoping for it to be called the Xenomorphs, myself

I wonder how long it'll be before some media wit down there starts calling them the Xenophonies.

It looks like the ALP has likely won Fisher off the back of an 8% swing.

The ReachTel Ashgrove poll is not the only 55-45 poll overnight. A national Galaxy (increasingly being looked to by Psephologists as the new gold standard) poll has the Government down 55-45 and the ALP primary on 41%.

Turnbull is also preferred Treasurer over Hockey 41-21%...

...edit. The swing in Fisher is now 9.2%. Labor has won it.

Nick Xenophon will do better than Katter. He's quite popular in South Australia and his favourite issues are pretty unique to him.

Also I don't see Turnbull becoming Treasurer, as that would only prove that the government is in chaos.

These Abbott morning show interviews I'm seeing lately are hilarious.  From today.

It's amazing that Kochie and Karl Stefanovic of all people are managing to fluster Abbott, considering that they're both basically national jokes.

The 13 year old daughter of the Victorian Agriculture Minister passed away this morning. A tragedy for any family, but I am especially saddened because Jaala Pulford is a genuinely nice person.

Gunman reportedly holding a cafe hostage in Sydney.

I hope all of our Aussie friends are ok down there.

Also reports that an ISIS flag is being pressed against the window.

EDIT: Apparently, the flag is not the ISIS flag... but contains the 'testament of faith' oath.

Yeah um this is weird. I've been to that 'chocolate cafe' as they call it. That's in Martin Place, right in the centre of Sydney. Hopefully everyone is alright.

There seems to be complete speculation that the guy is only holding up the chocolate café because he was spotted and jumped inside the café for cover, so now he probably has no idea what to do, since he may have been targeting something else.

Plenty of speculation about plenty of things, but that one does sound quite reasonable.

This is the report from the Guardian.

Have they deciphered the flag at this point? We know it is not an ISIS flag, but does it have any further context?

The Sydney Morning Herald says that it is a Shahada Flag, or a general expression of faith in Islam. It's apparently been associated with various groups, so there isn't really enough information to attribute it to any one in particular.

I saw this picture on the BBC:

Which depicts the shahada (la-ilah... etc, "there is no God but God and Muhammad is his prophet") on a black field, which considered in that specific context is usually associated with jihadism (as opposed to it on, for example, green, as it is on the flag of Saudi Arabia), but no, not any particular group, as opposed to, say, this arrangement including the "seal of Muhammad" and in a cruder style, which is associated with al-Shabab and ISIS specifically.

The fact the attacker had a flag at all, and this is pure speculation on my part, suggests to me that whoever is behind this planned in making it seen at some point, which they wouldn't if, say, they had planned on blowing themselves up. Not sure if this is relevant or how much it is if so, but something that occurred to me as I was writing.

It's an Islamic fundamentalist action. It doesn't really matter what group this guy claims allegiance to. I don't think was ordered by the "head office" of a specific group.

Very significant bushfires in Northern Victoria, between Benalla and Yackandandah.

My 70-year old Auntie and her 80-something husband live right smack bang in the middle of it all and are not contactable. As far as I can make out from the CFA their specific location is not on fire, and hopefully they've made the decision to leave. That said, they are surrounded by fires in all directions. I don't know how serious the specific fronts are, I get the sense that only one is extremely dangerous, but yeah.

It must be awful to have family in such a situation and not be able to contact them. I hope you get in touch soon and that your aunt and her husband aren't in any danger.

One of the relevant fires has just been downgraded to watch and act, and in the latest report on ABC the road they're on wasn't listed as closed and it's a significant enough road that it would be mentioned if it was closed I think.
