Well, it was blasphemous according to islam. Unintenbtional, obviously, but against the country's laws, however wrong those laws may be.

She's just been found guilty of "inciting religious hatred". Roll Eyes

And it actually has very little to do with blasphemy. Loads of kids in Muslim countries call their pets or plush dolls "Muhammed". This has a lot more to do with the Sudanese government wanting to do one over the British government for its criticism over Dafur, as well as the fact that the teacher in question actively encouraged some form of democratic discourse by letting the kids have a vote on the teddy bear's name.

Either way, it's shameful to see the Sudanese government trying to outdo its Turkmen- and North Korean counterparts for the title of Most Ludricous Regime in the World.

She's just been found guilty of "inciting religious hatred".

My understanding is that she was charged with this but was found guilty of the lesser offence of insulting religion.

By their same logic they should also demand the execution of anyone who named their child Mohammed.

It is ridiculous, but Sudan is also in a backwater government and full of extremism. With so much poverty and problems in Sudan, extremism has fertile ground.

One thing I'm wondering - I don't remember if we have any Muslims here, but why can people name their kid Muhammad?  Isn't that MORE blasphemous?  (It would seem so to me).

Apparently, it's acceptable for humans, but not for animals, real or otherwise.

Get informed on the Darfur situation before making any judgements.

I am rather well-informed.  The bottom line is these people are uncivilized and beyond help, any helping them is a waste of money because I'm sure money insults the prophet.

1. Since before Roman times, claims that the people beyond one's borders are barbarians/uncivilised/savages/etc. etc.; it displays remarkable egotism and a patronising moral superiority which is neither helpful nor justified   .

2. People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones...be very careful in denegrating any religion for what seems like a senseless belief or system of beliefs from the outside; it's not like one needs a great deal of logical acumen to start an assault on the supernatural beliefs of most near any religiously minded person.

Have a Christian from Darfur come talk to you - it might change your mind.

Last night, I stayed up until about midnight reading Jules Verne. Let me give you a quote from Five Weeks in a Balloon:

Might I remind you of the great civilizations of Kush and Meroë?

Any helping them is a waste of money because I'm sure money insults the prophet.

Quite untrue. Islamic civilizations are capable of producing peaceful, stable countries like Jordan. Just because you think they are uncivilized doesn't mean we shouldn't help them. An explanation for this that you might understand is here.

Or a non-Arabic Muslim from Darfur for that matter...

No, because teddy bears are (relatively) trivial and unimportant. People are not.

Not for the boy the bear was named after!

(yeah, that's an stupid argument, but it's also a stupid law, so that evens it out)
