These were Anderson's top five counties:

Nantucket, MA
Winnebago, IL
Dukes, MA
Pitkin, CO
Story, IA

Nader (2000) and Kerry did very well in Nantucket, Dukes, and Pitkin, suggesting that Anderson's votes came mainly from social liberals.

The recent results from Winnebago and Story are odd. Winnebago went narrowly for Bush (both times) and Story went narrowly for Gore and Kerry. Neither county had significant third party influence in 2000 or 2004. Does anyone know why Anderson did so well in these counties?

Edit: I remember that Anderson was from IL. Was Winnebago his home county?

Story is Ames and Iowa State.  Johnson was the 2nd best in Iowa, and it is Iowa City and University of Iowa.  Anderson was from Rockford (in Winnebago county).

In Lincoln, MA Anderson won 28%. In Amherst, MA Anderson came in 2nd with 24%. Both towns voted heavily for Nixon in '60, Johnson in '64, and split evenly in '68, '72, '76, giving Wallace nothing. Unsurprisingly, since 1984 both are solidly Dem.
