The Whigs decide to nominate Henry Clay for a third time.  He selects New York congressman Millard Fillmore as his running mate.  The Democrats renominate former President Van Buren, despite his landslide loss in 1840 to Harrison.  He chooses New York senator Silas Wright.

Van Buren is defeated soundly due to his failure as President, which is highlighted by Clay, who wins 175-100.

Well, of course this is the scenario that Clay expected (not to mention Van Buren himself), and the reason that they secretly agreed not to make Texas an issue in the upcoming campaign. I'd like to think Clay would have won-- it would have been interesting to see what he would have done as President-- but I'm not so sure he would have.
