In June, 2003, Vice President Dick Cheney resigns due to health problems.

Who does President Bush pick to replace him?

Remember that Bush would have the 2004 election in mind when choosing a new VP.

Keeping in mind that the new VP needs to be confirmed by both Houses, I would say either McCain or maybe Colin Powell.

DUH! What difference does that make?

My guess is probably George Pataki or John Danforth.

It means that Bush would need to appoint someone acceptable to enough Senate Democrats so that they would not try to fillibuster.

I don't think it would have been either McCain or Powell. Bush and McCain aren't the best of friends, and it's doubtful that Powell would have accepted if offered the post. Pataki is a possibility. How about Condoleeza Rice?
