something is for death of the fatherland, but I'm too lazy to look up dulce and decorum which I assume comes from decus, -i, m.

Great poem that uses the line, but I disagree with the concept.

"It is sweet and fitting to die for your country."

Which you could have discovered had you simply clicked the link.

Much better to try to sound smart.

The war that poem originated clearly demonstrated the danger in blind patriotism and nationalistic fervor.

No thanks. There are very few things I would die for. A political entity doesn't even bear consideration.

I'm not a big fan of war unless it is truly in defense of the country. But in any event I like General Patton's words better:

"Nobody ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor bastard die for his country."

Owen's poem was an obvious attack on the concept.

Agree- Committing your life to something you believe in and can maturely appreciate is actually a good thing. The question is whether someone appreciates their beliefs or if they are doing it for the right reasons.  I mean its great that the boys in Iraq are putting their asses on the line for us, but they may be doing it for reasons that are totally phucked that are not in line with the common good.

Somone once said (I can't remember who), "Patriotism is an irrational devotion to property over principles".

yes. I'm aware about Owen's poem...I disagree with the concept stated by the quote alone...my apologies for lack of explication.

Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori, sed dulcius pro patria vivere.

Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori, should not be a career goal.

I just realized the problem in my phrasing.  I meant, "The war that poem originated in..." in case anyone was under the impression that I thought Owen's poem started WWI.

Gotta agree here - the point of war isn't to die but to kill/injure/capture the other guy(s).

Completely agree. Why the hell would I die for a political entity. Also the poem is quite good.
