Ram Baran Yadav of the Nepali Congress, supported by CPN (Unified Marxist-Leninist) and the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum has been elected President of the Republic of Nepal by parliament in the second round of voting, with 308 votes against 282 for the Maoist candidate.

The Vice President, elected by the first round, is Parmanand Jha of the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum, whose candidacy was supported by the Congress and the CPN (UML).

It's a PSINO (Presidential system in name only).

Is it presidential? I thought they were electing a figurehead.

That makes it even worse.

Not really. Many countries with power-less Presidents do it in a similar way. India, Germany, Albania, Israel, France until 1962 all come to mind.
