Something else, and likely just as bad, would have brought him down instead.

I would say smack in the middle judging just his accomplishments.

Pretty much the middle. Cambodia prevents him from being anywhere more than middling, and opening China had little to do with Nixon himself.

I would put him in the middle.  Even without Watergate, his domestic policy was not that great, although he is top 10 in foreign policy.

Without Watergate he'd rank pretty high, I think; his domestic accomplishments weren't too great but his foreign-policy record was good (although deserving of some demerits for his handling of Vietnam). Of course, without Watergate he would have served two full terms, and what happened in the last two years of his second term may have had a lot of effect on his ranking.

When Nixon was President, I absolutely despised him. In retrospect, I can see him more objectively. I think he was one of the most intelligent, qualified, and capable men ever to serve as president, but like the hero in a Greek tragedy he was brought down by his fatal flaws.

His personal demons, which manifested themselves in a darkly paranoid worldview and his need to destroy his percieved enemies, was the forerunner of today's politics of personal destruction and character assasination and far outweighs any positive aspects of his administration.   He deserves nothing but utter contempt.

Bottom 10.  He's partly responsible for the health care mess we have today, as well as the use of subtle racism in Southern politics as an election ploy.  Total joke of a person.

I'm quite fond of his habit of himself getting blind drunk and then along with Kissinger semi-praying\worshipping the portrait of Lincoln in the white house gallery through the long hours of the night.

Hunter S. Thompson said everything there was ever to be said about Richard Milhaus Nixon.
