So I turned 18 in August and just registered now - I found out that contrary to my belief, they don't mail out the application.  If they force you to register, shouldn't THEY mail out the application?

Better yet, the office should be abolished altogether and no registration.

One of the good things Ron Paul does is introduce a bill every session to abolish the Department of Selective Service.

Nope.  It's your first step in being a "MAN."

One of the best aspects of Ron Paul, I admit.

Welcome to the world of incompetent beauracracy!

Speaking of incompetent beauracracy, on the website for the online form, they have a box for Gender w/ male and female.

Underneath that: At this time, the law only allows for males to register.

I apparently need to do one day of patriotic service at the French embassy next year. Dunno what it exactly is.

You basically sit in an auditorium and watch clips that explain how the army helps Third World countries and why democracy is so important.

It's in case one of those uppity females thinks she's patriotic enough to serve with our vimful U.S. Fighting Men, ho ho!

Believe me, the presenters (a French military officer and a member of the French consulate) were just as bored as we were.

The only question is...why?

Oh, and is it in French or English?

It was done in French by the French government. It doesn't seem useful, but it replaced France's mandatory military service, so I guess it's a small price to pay. If you're a French and you don't attend, though, you can't pass the French Baccalaureate (which means you can't go to college in France) and you can't vote in French elections.

I'll go anyways, will make something to talk about in school.

That and, as an added benefit, the right to vote.

Well, for starters, you won't be eligible for Federal Financial Aid.  I constantly ran into that problem with new students each quarter.
