Not his alleged flip-flopping.
Not his hiring of illegal immigrants.
Not his long-winded answers in debates.

No, it's his choice of books. Cheesy

what is especially amazing about that is that he admitted it. Romney usually answers things so carefully to be the 'right' answer politically. He could have said 'the bible' or name a shakespeare play or possibly a classic...but a bad sci-fi novel written by a cult leader that was turned into the biggest flop movie of the last decade...He must really love that book

His son Tagg is also a fan, though he can't spell the title right:

Note that Tagg likes other science fiction and fantasy books as well, including "Ender's Game", which was written by Orson Scott Card (who is also a Mormon).

Nothing wrong with enjoying Ender's Game. It was a good book as long as you don't try to take your moral judgments from it. I am curious how it is less of a guilty pleasure than Harry Potter, however.

Oh, I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with the book.  Just pointing out the Mormon connection.  Maybe the Romney family started reading Card, and it got them into other science fiction.  I don't know.

This is actually pretty hard to believe.

But it's always good to keep in mind that Battlefield Earth, like anything else written by L. Ron Hubbard and Joseph Smith, is fictional.

Well that nails it.  Romney is weird.

It is interesting that he would admit to this. Candidates usually try to make themselves look impressive when asked a question like this (whether or not they've really read what they claim to). Is this his attempt to come off as a "regular guy"?

If it is, it's pretty far off the mark.  It's really strange the more I think about it.  How many other books could he have named that would have made this a nonstory?  How many mainstream books would have been worse than this one?  Satanic Verses?  Anarchist Cookbook?  Koran?  Not many.  There are literally thousands of books he could have named that would have been "safe", yet he picked one written by one of the most successful conartists in the 20th Century.  How odd.

Maybe he was trying to get Tom Cruise to campaign for him? Grin

I agree, this ends any chance of my voting for Romney in the primary.
