In 1960

Vice President Richard M. Nixon of California sails to the Republican Presidential nomination.  Nixon persuades Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller of New York to accept the Vice Presidential nomination, appealing to his sense of duty to the nation, and emphasizing Rockefeller's abilities for the job.  Nixon assures Rockefeller he will have considerable responsibilities and influence as Vice President, and Rockefeller accepts.

On the Democratic side, Senate Majority Leader, Senator Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas, wins a hard fought battle for the Democratic nomination, defeating the young and charismatic Senator John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts in a closey contested and bitter contest.  Johnson picks liberal hero Senator Hubert H. Humphrey of Minnesota for Vice President, who is honored and happy to accept the position.

How does this election go?

I'll buy that for a dollar.

I'm assuming there are no televised debates?

There likely would be televised debates between Nixon and Johnson.

I see no reason, however, that Nixon would not do well in these debates against Johnson, who did not possess the Kennedy charm or mystique.

I concur with the maps posted, that this election would have produced a comfortable for Nixon and Rockefeller over Johnson and Humphrey.

The election might have been decided by which ticket was able to get to election day without being at each others' throats.
