What a waste on both sides. How dissapointing...

apparently, Edwards is not "coporate friendly enough" for their endorsement...

Register's Democratic endorsements:

1988: Paul Simon.
Outcome: Simon lost.

1992: No one
Outcome: None of the above lost

2000: Bill Bradley
Outcome: Bradley lost

2004: John Edwards
Outcome: Edwards lost.

Sure looks like a big "get" for Hillary.

Hillary bought them off or something.

Hillary met with the editor several times, they sent out Democratic luminaries like Mondale to attest to Hillary's skills, and Big Dawg called Washburn on multiple occasions to seal the deal.

wow. This may be enough to give her the state if it gives as big a bump as it did Edwards. Surprising to say the least. She may not be done after all.

I like how they say John McCain would be reluctant to start a war but then praise his support of "the surge."

Anyway, Clinton.  Ugh.  Is anyone else dreading the prospect of Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton?  Enough of this BS already.

If President Hillary wins two terms, I'll be 27 years old by the time I finally live under a President whose last name isn't Bush or Clinton.

Pretty lousy record of endorsements, although Paul Simon was cool. But Edwards and Bradley? Ugh.

Money may not buy you love, but it sure as heck seems to buy you votes in America.

Btw, are they endorsing one of the Republicans as well ? If so, I think its McCain.

Well, I read a NYT article today (too late) and they mentioned this:

Laura Hollingsworth, left, Carolyn Washburn and Carol Hunter lead the editorial board of The Des Moines Register.

That, by and large, would explain the endorsement for Hillary Clinton ... *feminist bit***s* Tongue

Hopefully the DMR record continues and Clinton still comes in second as all others have done before ...

People are overreacting to this. Who cares? The DMR endorsement wasn't what helped Edwards come in second at the end in Jan. '04, it was Kucinch telling his people to caucus for him. This will just help raise the expectations back up for Clinton in Iowa which will make Obama's win more meaningful.

Uhh... I doubt Kucinich commanded over 20% of Iowa caucus-goers. If he did, he wouldn't have formed an alliance with Edwards.

Well that certainly had a bigger impact than the DMR endorsement on his final numbers.

Edwards had been gaining before the DMR endorsement. In many ways, claiming that the DMR endorsement gave him the momentum to take a surprise second was revisionist history on the part of all the "Iowa insiders" that had pegged Dean to win the caucus.

Well if the extraordinary lobbying efforts by the campaigns are any indication, this is still a very coveted endorsement. Obviously this is disappointing for Obama, but it must be even worse for Edwards.

I don't think these endorsements have much effect.

Generally I think endorsements don't matter but this one does.  The Des Moines Register is the only statewide paper in Iowa and has always taken its role in the Presidential nominating process very seriously.  The campaigns would not have been trying so hard to get The Register endorsement if it was not important.  Chris Cillizza of the Washington Post writes:

However, history shows us that the endorsement winner is very frequently not the Iowa Caucus winner.  On the whole, I doubt this will convert Clinton skeptics but I believe that it will bolster wavering Hillary supporters and firm up her base.  Clinton may still lose the Iowa Caucus but if so she will not lose it by a substantial margin.
