While there are of course many Kerry counties surrounded by Bush counties, there are only a handful of Bush counties surrounded by Kerry counties:

Cross, AR (55%-44%)
Cedar, IA (50%-49%)
Delaware, IA (53%-46%)
Piscataquis, ME (53%-44%)
Washington, ME (50%-48%)
Cape May, NJ (57%-42%)
Salem, NJ (53%-46%)
Richmond, NY (56%-43%)
Cameron, TX (50%-49%)
Essex, VT (54%-43%)
Clallam, WA (51%-46%)
Richland, WI (51%-48%)

Does anyone know anything about these counties and why they vote that way?

Some of those are superficial. Cape May County only borders two other counties, Cumberland County and Atlantic County. Cumberland County contains some very poor and fairly Hispanic towns such as Vineland and Millville while Cape May County is entirely expensive beachfront property and rural areas. Atlantic County contains Atlantic City.

Salem County is similar. To its north, Gloucester County contains a lot of Philadelphia suburbs, while Cumberland County to its east I went over above. Salem County itself is small and rural with no developments of appreciable size (for New Jersey, anyway).

Indeed, Salem County is smaller in population than my current town.

So apart from in Arkansas, there are no Bush counties surrounded by Kerry counties?  That's quite stark.
