I feel like I am being too generous to Smathers:

Wallace would have the same EV's in RL so add Georgia, Arkansas and probably South Carolina.

My line of thinking is that Smathers, who was a southern Democrat, would do much better than Humphrey did.

A Nixon blowout.

Smathers would simply not have measured up at the Presidential level.

Nixon/Agnew                     400
Smathers/Kennedy              93
Wallace/LeMay                    45

Small update added, I gave Nixon Maine as well.  The only reason Nixon did not win Maine in 1968 in real life is because Muskie was the Democratic Vice Presidential nominee.

I also have my doubts that Smathers would have carried Florida against Nixon in a Presidential election in 1968.  A Senate race, yes, Smathers would have won, but for President, I have my doubts about that.

Smathers was one of the Senators who signed the southern manifesto and thus would have been weaker in the north but stronger in the south.  Wallace only runs due to the presence of a Kennedy on the ticket.

Smathers/Kennedy    75
Nixon/Agnew             418
Wallace/LeMay          45

Kennedy would never have accepted second place on the ticket.

Kennedy would never have accepted second place on the ticket.

No Kennedy would for that matter. Though JFK tried in 1956 to get on the Democratic ticket. He did that deliberately, we all knew he had no intention of being Vice President plus they had no chance in '56 against Ike. If Smathers was nominated who would accept to be his running mate in this scenario?
