Kennedy would never have accepted second place on the ticket.

No Kennedy would for that matter. Though JFK tried in 1956 to get on the Democratic ticket. He did that deliberately, we all knew he had no intention of being Vice President plus they had no chance in '56 against Ike. If Smathers was nominated who would accept to be his running mate in this scenario?
