What if President Bush had fired Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld in the week immediately prior to election day, enabling Republicans to retain control of both houses of Congress that year, but by razor-thin margins over Congressional Democrats?  How differently would 2007 have turned out, and how much impact would it have on Democrats' chances of taking control of both Congress and the White House in 2008?

Depends on who survives.  For example someone like George Allen or Michael Steele may have seemed like a good 2008 POTUS or VP possibility.  Others may have not been so lucky, such as Tester's opponent in MT.
