Is a map like this possible for the Democrats in 2008?  And under what circumstances?  Like -- Republican nominee caught in bed with a boy...Bush plans to nuke Iran made public...what?

(GOP trounces Dems map coming...)

GOP nominates one of Thompson, Romney, Huckabee, or Hunter and has anything less than a stellar campaign. Dems nominate someone besides Hillary who doesn't make any major mistakes.

Well Bacon,  This is my dream map --

But I completely realize it's totally hackish and will NEVER happen in my lifetime.  Unless there's a GOP scandal of unthinkable proportions.  (And I would never wish for that!)

Romney would have to be the nominee (Utah).  Against...not Clinton.  Somewhat possible.  Unlikely.

The map in the original post is probably the absolute best-case scenario for the Dems. I dunno.... Edwards vs Romney?

ROmney or Huckabee against Edwards. I would say Obama but he just doesn't do well in some states--like Oklahoma. But Obama could. If the GOP nominates Giuliani or McCain, no chance it turns into that.

Romney v. Obama, with Bayh as his running mate, and Romney does a really bad job during the campaign.

^^^^^^^^^

Huckabee would pull too well in the upper South and the heartland for him to lose all those states against even Edwards.

that's a fairly plausible map if Obamamania continues and the Dems have a solid victory.  I wouldn't predict it at this point, but I don't think it's all that farfetched at all.  Just a few point swing would bring something pretty close to that map to fruition.

And just how many points are needed to move Louisiana to voting for a black Presidential candidate?

louisiana has a large black population.  I have to admit that the impact of Katrina may have changed the calculus in that state to where it's no longer winnable even in a solid dem victory.  Kentucky might also be a stretch, despite some Democratic victories there of late.  When push comes to shove, unless the reps look to be total losers a few of those states are unlikely to go dem at this point.  But obviously, New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada, Iowa, Ohio, Florida, Missouri and to a lesser degree Virginia, Arkansas, West Va seem to be the states that a solid dem victory would turn.
