He was good, not great mind you, but good.  He kept the nation out of trouble and most importantly he pardoned Nixon, the first step on the road to recovering our relations with Washington.

I put him somewhere in the average category.  I find it hypocritical that he gave a blanket wide-open pardon to a man not yet accused of a crime (Nixon) yet refused to pardon conscientious objectors who moved to Canada to avoid being drafted.

I also disagree with his Halloween Massacre which ushered in the group that eventually became this administration.

At the most average for what he accomplished during his two and a half years in office. He will be most remembered for pardoning Nixon and that was the best thing he did even though it cost him the '76 election.

In comparison, he's far far better than both his predecessor and successor.

He was better than his predecessor and successor.  That is not saying much.

The presidents from 1963-81 were not particularly good; he might have been one of the better ones in that group.

Indeed.

Ford did OK given the people that surrounded him, East Timor and the Nixon pardon apart I can't think of anything too offensive which happened during his presidency.

I say no. He was a very good man, but not president.

He was in over his head, that simple. He didn't want to be president, so I am very liberal when judging his presidency. However, his silly way of dealing with inflation and his foreign policy blunder with the USS Maddox make me unable to call him a "great" president. Heck, he even failed when it came to detente, something he was a champion of.

I rank President Ford as an "average" president.

Most of what Carter's usually blamed for was beyond the point of no return by the time he was elected. Gerald Ford was a decent man but a disastrous president who followed upon an even worse disaster of a president. The problem, of course, was that Gerald Ford used to play football without a helmet.
