Seriously though, it doesn't have to be a hard swat.  Just enough to get the kids attention to make sure they've learned their lesson.  I'm not talking about beating a child until they're black and blue and not able to sit for a week.

Don't take it as a compliment.  In civilized countries, you don't hit children.
